The ‘Forager’ label is the exciting family wine project of talented and thoughtful winemaker Dominic Maxwell at Greystone Wines in the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury. Dominic was awarded 2018 New Zealand Winemaker of the Year for his high quality wines and this is his personal project that lets him express his individual take on Pinot Noir.

Dominic intends to take the natural process of winemaking to a new level by conducting wild fermentation in the vineyard so that the indigenous yeasts of the vineyard can work thoroughly in their natural environment to truly express the actual vineyard site and "the essence of the land” as Dominic puts it.

Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"This is the ninth release of Forager Pinot Noir. 2020 was a season providing both good crop levels and wonderful pure fruit. A season beginning with good soil moisture led to a period of mixed weather through late Spring and early Summer. The late season was exceptional allowing for good ripening and healthy fruit condition. Several passes through this small vineyard to tend to shoot thinning, bunch thinning, dropping shoulders and leaf plucking have provided the natural raw ingredients for a vibrant and expressive wine. The fruit was hand picked in late March and left outside in the vines to ferment with a full 26 days on skins, before bringing to the winery for a gentle pressing to French oak barrels. The wine was aged for 14 months before bottling without fining or
filtration."

Rated Outstanding & 96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2024 (2020 Vintage)
"Fantastic bouquet, lively earthy fresh, mineral and vibrantly new. Aromas and flavours of iron saline minerality then varietal fruit flavours of plums and tart cherries, dried herbs and preserved flowers. Both the bouquet and palate have texture, shape and form, the dried herb flavours are integral the mouthfeel combinations of fruit and synergy flavours. Taut, dry, lengthy and complex. A wine that will engage the palate, open the mind to new ideas about Pinot Noir. Best drinking from 2028 through 2038."

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, July 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Grown on the limestone hills of Waiau, 40 minutes drive from Waipara. On the same hillside as the Amuri Limeworks overlooking the Waiau River. Made by rockstar winemaker, Dom Maxwell. Fermented in the vineyard that produced the grapes to gain a stronger sense of place. Light, supple red with cherry, red and black berries combine with a salty/savoury/baked earth, bramble character. Distinctive and appealing Pinot."

5 Stars & 19/20 (95) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, June 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Deep, crimson, lighter on edge. The nose is intense and full, packed with blackberries, cherries, floral and bark fragrances alongside dark herbs and spice. Medium-full bodied, herbaceous aromas of thyme and pine lead the palate with black pepper and cardamon, unfolding cherries, blackberries and rich floral fragrance. The fruit shows a sense of purity, calmly supportive in the background with integrated acidity. Powdery tannin extraction coated the mouthfeel with a light grip and silky veil. This savoury Pinot Noir features fruit's purity and natural tannin structure without makeup, reflecting a sense of place and growing season. Match with truffle risotto and roasted pigeon over the next 8+ years. Fruit from Isolated Hill Vineyard, fermented outdoor amongst the vines to 14% alc, 26 days on skins, then brought into winery and pressed to French oak barrels and aged 14 months, 8% new oak. Unfined, unfiltered."

93/100 David Walker Bell, WineFolio.co.nz, October 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"From Waiau in North Canterbury – on the limestone hills inland from Waipara. The ferment starts in the vineyard itself, cementing a sense of place in the wine in your glass. A dense purple colour, with vibrant aromas of red cherry, cranberry, rosehip, thyme, forest floor, boysenberry, pepper and wisteria on the nose. A lighter-bodied style, supple and silken. Crisp acidity and chalky tannin form the spine, with a distinctive savoury element woven into the palate, where flavours of terracotta, peat, middle eastern spices and orange peel combine elegantly. The finish returns to plush fruit, sweetening and lengthening."
