NZ Gimblett Gravels Top 12 Annual Vintage Selection 2016
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"This is a single vineyard wine from the Cornerstone Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels. The vines, planted in 1996, are spur pruned and trained on a vertically shoot positioned trellis and intensively managed to provide quality grapes for this Winemakers Reserve wine. Yields are kept very low and the fruit is hand harvested.
The hand-picked fruit was destemmed and transferred to a 1930s open-topped concrete fermenter. Fermentation began spontaneously and when active the ferment was plunged by hand up to four times daily. Once dry, the wine was macerated on skins and pressed after a total vatting time of around 30 days. Malolactic fermentation was conducted in barrel and the wine then aged for a further 14 months in barrel. The wine was bottled in October 2017. 150 cases produced.
This is a deeply coloured and dense red wine with a youthful hue. It showcases a pure and varietal nose so typical of the Gimblett Gravels, exhibiting dark berries and spice notes which include sandalwood, camphor and black pepper. The wine is soft but has considerable tannin supported by a clean acid spine providing length and freshness. This wine will age well and gain considerable complexity with time."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"The classy young 2016 vintage was grown in the Cornerstone Vineyard, hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 15 months in French oak barriques (30 per cent new). Dark and purple-flushed, with fragrant plum and spice aromas, it is sturdy and well structured, with concentrated, youthful plum and black-pepper flavours, good tannin backbone, and lovely harmony and length."
5 Stars & 19.0-/20 (95) Raymond Chan, November 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Full, even, purple-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is a little restrained, with softly concentrated, integrated and layered aromas of ripe blackberry fruit along with savoury plums entwined with soft, nutty oak complexities, unfolding a little game and iron-earth interest. This is presently locked-up, but will clearly reveal savoury complexities with some time. Medium-full bodied, the palate is softly sweet and fulsome, with lusciously rich, ripe blackberry fruit with dark plums and subtle spice and nutty oak elements, unfolding black pepper. The flavours are harmoniously balanced and interwoven, and the fruit is supported by plenty of fine-grained tannin structure, along with a thread of soft acidity lending energy. The wine carries seamlessly to a smooth and detailed finish. This is a fine structured Syrah with interwoven flavours of blackberry fruit with plums and savoury nutty complexities, iron-earth notes and spices, on a beautifully balanced palate. It will emerge from its shyness, and develop over the next 7-9+ years. 100% Syrah, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 17 months in 30% new French oak."
