From the Cornerstone vineyard. This is in a really good place now with all the edges mellowed out. Quite perfumed with fine dried spices, dark fruits, subtle pepper and a gravelly minerality. This is just taking on some secondary characters. This is a treat of a wine with a length of flavour that really lingers.

Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"This is a single vineyard wine from the Cornerstone Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels. The vines, now 18 years old are spur pruned, trained on a vertical shoot positioned trellis and intensively managed to provide quality grapes for this Winemakers Reserve label. Yields are kept very low and the fruit has been hand harvested.

The fruit was destemmed and transferred for fermentation to a 1930s open-topped concrete fermenter. Fermentation began spontaneously and when active the fermenters were plunged by hand up to four times daily. Once dry, the new wine was macerated on skins and after a total vat time of approximately 30 days pressed to barrel for malolactic fermentation and ageing. Fifty-five percent of the barrels were new. The wine was bottled in December 2015.

This is a deeply coloured and aromatic wine representing the best of the 2014 harvest. It displays notes of red fruits, blackberries and spice, with a subtle oak complexity. Full bodied and satisfying it also displays an elegance typical of Gimblett Gravels Syrah. 400 cases were produced."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"Densely coloured, the powerful 2014 vintage was grown in the Cornerstone Vineyard and matured for 16 months in French oak barriques (55 per cent new). A floral, vibrantly fruity red, it is sturdy (14.5 per cent alcohol), with highly concentrated, ripe plum, blackcurrant and spice flavours and a lush, smooth finish. Already delicious, it should be at its best 2019+."

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, May 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Dense, deep syrah with ripe dark berry, plum, liquorice. dark chocolate, mocha and spicy oak flavours. Brooding but accessible red with sweet fruit supported by a backbone of ripe tannins. Will develop well with bottle age."

5 Stars & Top 5 Cuisine Syrah Tasting, June 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"On a hillside beside the sea north of Napier, few New Zealand wineries are as beautifully situated as Esk Valley. A step up in complexity and depth over Esk’s excellent Hawke’s Bay Syrah, this Reserve wine opens with aromas of dark berries, pepper, earth and restrained oak. The palate is ripe, smooth and warmly satisfying, with layers of fruit richness and integrated ripe tannins combining beautifully. A wine for syrah-braised oxtail."

5 Stars & 19.5/20 (98) Raymond Chan, September 2016 (2014 Vintage)
"Very dark, inky black-red with purple hues. The nose is powerful and intense with deeply packed, vibrant black-berried fruits melded with Asian spices, black pepper, unfolding lifted dark-red fruits and florals along with exotic oak and savoury game complexities. Nuances of minerals add to the complexity. Full-bodied, the palate features rich, lusciously sweet and vibrant fruit flavours of ripe blackberries and black pepper, along with Asian spices, plums and florals. Exotic oak elements add lift. The palate has real concentration and intensity. Balanced acidity lends vitality and energy and the rich fruit is supported by very fine-grained, serious extraction and structure. The lush fruit flavours and tannins carry to a very long, lingering, succulent and concentrated finish. This is a wonderfully rich and luscious, vibrantly fruited Syrah with blackberries, black pepper and spices and serious underlying structure. 10-12+ years. 100% Syrah from the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 55% new French oak. 400 cases made."
