Winery notes (2013 Vintage)
"This is a deeply coloured and aromatic wine representing the best of the 2013 harvest. It displays notes of red fruits, blackberries and spice, with a subtle oak complexity. Full bodied and satisfying it also displays an elegance typical of Gimblett Gravels Syrah. 390 cases were produced."

97/100 Decanter (2013 Vintage)
"Fermented in open-top concrete fermenters (unusual in NZ, common in the Rhône). Intense, rich Syrah – plum, berry and exotic spice flavours with a more savoury, roasted coffee influence. A weighty red with a long finish."

5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (2013 Vintage)
"A stunning mix of fruit purity and savoury complexity. The fabulously fragrant bouquet shows dark plum, black olive, game and floral characters with a hint of vanillin oak. It is rich and opulent while remaining firm and structured, with velvety mouthfeel and supple tannins. At its best: 2018 to 2030."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2013 Vintage)
"The 2013 vintage was matured for 16 months in French oak barriques (35 per cent new). It's a tightly structured red, dark and powerful, with concentrated plum and spice flavours, hints of liquorice and black pepper, and a floral bouquet. Still very youthful, it's a strong candidate for cellaring."

5 Stars & 19.0+/20 Raymond Chan, October 2015 (2013 Vintage)
"Very dark, near impenetrable purple-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on edge. The nose is soft, full and voluminous, with open and accessible, harmoniously interwoven aromas of ripe black-berried fruits with violet florals, iron-earth elements, Asian spices and subtle herbal nuances. Gentle layers of black pepper, tar and oak unfold, adding layers of interest. Medium-full bodied, full, broad and softly mouthfilling flavours of succulently ripe black fruits are integrated with waves of savoury florals and spices, and complexing earth and game notes. The palate and mouthfeel are balanced with rich textures and structure, and gentle acid freshness. The tannin presence builds in the glass and the wine flows harmoniously, forming a lively, rich and savoury, long-lingering finish. This is a full, mouthfilling, harmoniously layered, spicy and earthy Syrah with a fresh palate. Match with slow-cooked lamb and with casseroles over the next 10-12 years. 100% Syrah from the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard, indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 35% new French oak. 365 cases made."
