Winery notes (2017 vintage)
"Esk Valley has always been committed to producing wines of provenance and in this regard, The Hillside is almost peerless.
While the 2017 Hawkes Bay vintage was widely regarded as challenging, the attention to detail and ongoing work in The Terraces vineyard has ensured a wine of premium quality. These vines in 2017 were marking their 28th growing season and responded well to our dry farming and organic practices, once again producing a full bodied and richly textured wine flush with the unique personality of the site.
Made in minute quantities without compromise, The Hillside 2017 bears a striking resemblance to its illustrious sibling Heipipi ‘The Terraces’. Grown on the famed hillside vineyard just north of Bay View, this Malbec dominant field blend was fermented in a single concrete fermenter and bottled unfined and unfiltered (vegan friendly).
Age-worthy and expressive it perfectly captures the personality and uniqueness of this great vineyard site. This however is a wine to enjoy whilst waiting patiently for the greatest vintages of “The Terraces” to mature."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, November 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"This is splendidly fruited and gorgeously styled; the fragrant bouquet shows Black Doris plum, cassis, violet and vanillin oak characters with nuances of olive and dried herbs. The palate delivers excellent concentration and depth, together with rich texture and chalky tannins, leading to a magnificently long, engaging finish. At its best: now to 2030."
