Champion Value White – Vino Fino Awards 2018

Fruit for this is sourced from three blocks – Bayview, Puketapu Terrace and Keltern. 85% is barrel fermented (15%) new and aged on lees for 9 months. Winemaker Gordon Russell likes to pick earlier rather than later to preserve acid freshness ('electricity'). This has a beautiful blend of white and yellow peach flavours; a hint of butter with the acidity holding it in place. This current release is from a second bottling which has no fining or cold stabilisation. As natural as it can be. A beautiful Chardonnay.

Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"This is a medium-bodied and elegant style of Hawkes Bay Chardonnay. The palate is soft and textured with flavours of peach, intermingled with hints of butter, grilled nuts and subtle oak spice.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from subregions around Hawkes Bay. Vineyards in the north at Bay View, provide the finished wine with ripe stone fruit characters, while sites on the cooler river terraces above the Tukaekuri River at Puketapu and the Ngaruroro River at Maraekakaho add a more flinty, grapefruit note. These sites also provide natural acidity to the blended wine. Shoot thinning, leaf plucking and bunch thinning are all practised in the pursuit of quality.

The individual vineyard parcels were harvested separately in mid to late March and fermented in both tank and French oak barriques (85%). the finished wines were left on there yeast lees with regular stirring until blending and bottling in January 2018. A percentage of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to naturally soften the wine."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Top vintages can offer irresistible value. Already drinking well, the 2017 vintage was mostly (85 per cent) fermented in French oak barriques (15 per cent new); 15 per cent of the blend was tank-fermented. Light lemon/green, with a fragrant, slightly smoky bouquet, it is mouthfilling, with generous, vibrant, peachy flavours, a hint of butterscotch and good complexity."
