Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"This wine was grown on the Cleland Vineyard Cambridge Road, Martinborough from 29 year old vines. A combination of deep alluvial gravels which the Martinborough Terraces are renowned for and a blend of Clones UCD 5, 6 and 13 always rewards us with savoury, complex, spicy wine.

It was open top fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional wooden cuvees, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 23 days. After pressing it was matured in 40% new French oak barriques for 18 months. It was fined to protect the flavours and aid brightness in the glass. Bottled without filtration, promoting soft mouth feel and texture.

This is an outstanding example of classic Pinot Noir. It will continue to develop for up to 10 years and will always be a wonderful counterpart to any game food."

5 Stars & 19.0/20 (95) Raymond Chan, April 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim with slight garnet hues. The nose is elegant and harmonious in presentation and proportion with near-ethereal, interwoven aromas of ripe, savoury dark-red berry fruit along with notes of blackberries melded with piquant dark herbs, some whole bunch stalk nuances, and nutty, cedary oak suggestions. This has finesse and integration, with real depth, and unfolds a little raspberry liqueur with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate has a refined and tightly concentrated core of ripe, savoury dark-red berry fruit intermixed with a layering of spices, cedar and earth, and subtle dark and dried herb detail, and nuances of whole bunch stalk and nutty oak complexities. The flavours form a fine-grained, well-concentrated core with fine, powdery tannin extraction providing structure and grip. The acidity is soft and integrated, and the wine has excellent linearity, carrying to a very long and sustained, rich, savoury and spicy finish. This is a very rich and concentrated, elegant Pinot Noir with a fine core of dark-red fruits melded with herb and spice complexities. Match with coq au vin and slow-cooked game meat over the next 6-8+ years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Cleland’ vineyard on Cambridge Road, a blend of clones 5, 6 and 13, vines 29 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with 50% whole bunches to 12.7% alc., the wine spending 23 days on skins and aged 18 months in 40% new French oak barriques."
