70% Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bousche) & 30% Moravia Agria

Envinate began with four friends, who met studying wine at university, near Alicante. They decided to form a wine company together, and are now making some of Spain’s most exciting wines, with a focus on Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands.

Albahra comes from a single vineyard that is divided into 3 parcels at 800 meters elevation in the Almansa region, around the town of Albacete. Almansa is located at the southeastern tip of Castilla-La Mancha. The Mediterranean-Continental climate results in wines of consistency: warm days, with a touch of humidity from the Mediterranean, give way to cool nights.

Garnacha Tintorera, also known as Alicante Bouschet, is the primary grape in Albahra. It is a hybrid of the Garnacha and Petit Bouschet grapes. It is one of the few red grapes with dark coloured flesh, hence the name Tintorera, or "tinted."

Fermented and aged in concrete, the 30 year old vines impart a dark colour. Earthy fresh, blackberry, cherry and dusty-plum fruits mingle with peppery spice, anise and hints of minerality. Medium weight with pronounced acidity, Albahra is a stellar example of this up and coming D.O.

Reviews for the 2016 vintage below…

97/100 & 100 Best Wines Under $30 2018, James Suckling, January 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Wildly complex with fragrant, rich red cherries and boysenberries cast against dark, stony minerals. The palate has a long, succulent and compelling tannin structure with dark, rich and concentrated raspberries and red cherries. This is really something! Drink or hold."

93/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2016 Vintage)
"2016 saw more rain and even snow in this very dry zone, which helped the plants for the grapes used for the 2016 Albahra to regain balance and retain more acidity. The Garnacha Tintorera comes from 25-year-old vines on limestone and clay soils at 800 meters altitude, and the Moravia Agria (which represents 30% of the volume) comes from 40-year-old vines on limestone, sand and clay soils at 710 meters altitude. The Garnacha is kept unoaked, but the Moravia is put in neutral barriques for eight months. I nearly fell off my chair when I put my nose in the glass. There is a jump in quality from 2015 to this vintage, and they seem to have mastered the Moravia, which has a lot more tannin than they thought. It also has a lot of acidity, but here it seems to provide a very elegant and floral touch, with Mediterranean hints of balsam and herbs. The palate has a juicy texture with a refreshing touch."
