Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"The 2017 Reserve Syrah has dark, youthful colour. Rich and silky textured, with concentrated plum, spice flavours and a hint of violet petal. Deliciously elegant and harmonious. It is a wine that will keep improving and can be enjoyed with proper cellaring for up to 2026.
The 2017 Reserve Syrah is made with 99% of Syrah grapes from our Gimblett, Te Awanga and Bridge Pa Triangle Vineyards with 1% Viognier co-fermented into the blend. Small ferments ranging from 1 to 5 tonnes combining traditional open top oak cuves and stainless open top fermenters. The ferments were hand plunged and the wine was then aged for 20 months in 38% new French oak with an additional 4 months in tank on lees. There was no fining and minimal filtration."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2020 (2017 Vintage)
"This is beautifully ripe and splendidly expressed, showing Black Doris plum, dark cherry, violet and subtle cedar characters on the nose with a hint of pepper spice. The palate displays lovely concentration and fruit intensity together with fleshy mouthfeel and polished tannins, finishing wonderfully long and velvety. At its best: now to 2027."
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, April 2020 (2017 Vintage)
"Bold, rich, fruity and almost exotic with varietal aromas of dark red currants and raspberry, dark red cherry – all laced with toasty barrel aromas with roasted vanilla and clove. On the palate – dry, peppery, fruity with flavours that reflect the nose. Firm youthful tannins, no mistaking the back bone of acidity set against a core of varietal fruit flavours and textures and a lengthy complex building finish. Balanced and well made. Drink now and through 2025."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Already delicious, but set for a long life. It is full-coloured, weighty and complex, with concentrated, plummy, spicy flavours, supple tannins and a very harmonious, lasting finish. A very ‘complete’ wine."
5 Stars & 19-/20 Candice Chow for Raymond Chan Review, August 2020 (2017 Vintage)
"Deep, ruby-red with some depth and a dark purple hue, lighter on edge. The nose is gently full with power and concentration, red plums, blackberries, along with medicinal herbs, black pepper, unfolding smoke meat and leathery nuances. Full-bodied, dense fruit of Doris plums, blackberries have a concentrated core, along with smoky bacon, black pepper, liquorice and leather linger to a long, sustained finish. The fruit has the right ripeness, densely formed with weight; interweaved finely extracted velvety fine-grained tannin, smooth and comforting. Dark and medicinal herb element is attractive, complementing the smoky bacon and leathery detail added richness and interest. Lacy acidity provides just enough brightness to this otherwise too dense Syrah, flows lively to a lengthy, sustained finish. This is a full-bodied Syrah with flavours of dark fruit, complexing herbs and smoke meat detail. Match with lamb ribs and meat stew over the next 5-8 years, will benefit from decanting. 99% Syrah and 1% Viognier co-fermented to 13.4% alc. Aged for 20 months in French oak, 38% new. Further aged in tanks on lees for 4 months."
