Gold Medal – China Wines & Spirit Awards 2018
72% Merlot, 18% Syrah, 5% Malbec & 2% Cabernet Sauvignon
Elephant Hill is all about quality. From their award winning restaurant, winery building and of course to their wines. We just love the Le Phant Rouge because it's just so deliciously drinkable with gorgeous fruit and a lovely spice element coming through from the Syrah. All up it's a juicy, round and mouthfilling blend that shows Hawkes Bay red at its accessible best.
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The 2016 Le Phant Rouge is a Hawke’s Bay red blend of Merlot (72%), Syrah (18%), Malbec (5%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (2%).The grapes were hand harvested from our Gimblett, Te Awanga and Triangle Vineyards, carefully destemmed to open top cuves and fermented over a fourteenday period. The wine went through malolactic fermentation in oak with minimal intervention for 12 months, 25% new French oak. It is a medium-bodied Merlot dominant blend displaying blackberry, cassis and plum characters with a succulent texture and great finish. It can be enjoyed for a further 6 to 8 years from vintage."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"A gorgeous blend of merlot, syrah and malbec, the inviting bouquet shows blackcurrant, plum, vanilla, cedar and mixed spice aromas, followed by a succulent palate that is plump and silky. The wine offers excellent weight and fruit intensity, leading to a lingering smooth finish. It is rich and flavoursome with plenty of attractive flavours. At its best: now to 2024."
