Elephant Hill is all about quality. From their award winning restaurant (now closed), winery building and of course to their wines. We just love the Le Phant Rouge because it's just so deliciously drinkable with gorgeous fruit and a lovely spice element coming through from the Syrah. All up it's a juicy, round and mouthfilling blend that shows Hawkes Bay red at its accessible best.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"The 2017 Le Phant Rouge is a Hawke’s Bay red blend of 72% Merlot, 27% Syrah and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were harvested from our Gimblett and Triangle Vineyards, carefully de-stemmed to open top cuves and fermented over a fourteen-day period. The wine went through malolactic fermentation in oak with minimal intervention for 12 months, 25% new French oak.
It is a medium-bodied Merlot dominant blend displaying blackberry, cassis and plum characters with a succulent texture and great finish. It is a true reflection of our Hawke’s Bay vineyards and a great representation of the 2017 vintage."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2020 (2017 Vintage)
"This is beautifully fruited and delightfully perfumed on the nose showing blackcurrant, spiced plum, vanilla and toasted nut characters with a hint of tobacco. It’s succulent and wonderfully weighted on the palate, offering terrific fruit intensity backed by fine texture and grainy tannins, making it sturdy yet immediately appealing. At its best: now to 2027."
4 Stars & 18/20 Candice Chow for Raymond Chan Reviews, June 2020 (2017 Vintage)
"Deep, dark black-red colour, lighter on the rim. The nose is soft with good intensity aromas of berry fruit, cassis, plums, melded with herbaceous notes and integrated fragrant oak element. The palate is pleasantly soft and juicy berries, plums and cassis, entwined with herbs and toasty oak spices. Medium-bodied, the mouthfeel is smooth with ripe fine-grained tannin structure, providing a soft grip. The balanced acidity flows with good energy and freshness, to a rounded, linear, dry finish. This a soft and succulent Merlot dominant blend, exhibiting juicy red fruit and herbs, with an integrated fine-grained tannin structure supported by toasty oak detail. Match with red meat over the next 3-5 years. A blend of 72% Merlot, 27% Syrah, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.4% alc. Aged 12 months in French oak, 25% new oak."
