Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Our Pinot Noir vines grow on two rare Bannockburn sites untouched by miners. For almost 100 years fruit was grown on the Domain Road site, peaches, pears and apples originally and then apricots at a later stage. It has been said that if you can grow apricots then you can also grow great Pinot Noir and this has certainly been the case at Domain Road. Our second vineyard, Defiance on Felton Road is considered to be one of the prime sites in this well known location. Our Pinot Noir vines from these two sites deliver a complexity that reflect the unique location of the vineyards.

The grapes (clones 113, 115, 943 and Abel) were hand harvested on 27th & 28th March 2021 from Defiance vineyard. The fruit was de-stemmed into stainless steel tanks with approximately 8% added as whole bunch and inoculated with indigenous yeasts to carry out the fermentation. The wine was aged in French oak barriques for approximately 10 months, of which 31% was new oak.

Deep garnet with purple hues in colour, our Pinot Noir has fragrant aromas of violets, dark cherry, blackberry, dark plum, spice, tobacco leaf and toasty oak with a touch of mint on the nose. The palate is rich and concentrated with ripe black plum, cherry, dark chocolate and blackberry. A full bodied wine with ample silky fine tannins, leading to a long ripe berry finish."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"It's gorgeously expressed on the nose, showing dark cherry, roasted nut, clove, dried mushroom and rich floral aromas, leading to a wonderfully flavoursome palate that's succulent and lingering. Generous yet refined and sophisticated with a sustained structured finish. At its best: now to 2033."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2021 Vintage)
"The classy 2021 vintage was estate-grown and hand-picked in the Defiance Vineyard, and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (31 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is mouthfilling, with vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours, concentrated, ripe, savoury and well-structured. Still youthful, it should be at its best 2025+. Fine value."

Reviews for the 2020 vintage below…

Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Complex ripe and very new. Vibrant aromas and textures including fresh and tart raspberry, fresh plums and a fine savoury mineral frame. On the palate – delicious, but very youthful with an abundance of tannins and back bone of acidity then a core of ripe red berry fruit flavours. New oak flavours and textures, a fine savoury complexity and a clay stone mineral quality. A wine for the cellar or definitive food pairing plan with best drinking from 2024 through 2030+."

5 Stars & 19+/20 (96) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, April 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Deep, ruby-red with a purple hue, slightly lighter on the rim. The nose is broody and alluring, with aromas of blackberries, black cherries, interweave pine, thyme, cloves and fragrant oak elements. Medium-full bodied, perfumed fruit of blackberries, cherries melded with pine and thyme, unfolding cloves, cinnamon bark and a hint of earth. Savoury tannins are fragrant and rich, adding a velvety, fine-grained grip to the mouthfeel. Balanced, lacy acidity carries the flavour to a long, perfumed finish. This black-fruited Pinot Noir shows balance, strength, power, and elegance and will be rewarded with short-term ageing. Match with hare and lamb over the next 10+ years. Handpicked fruit from Defiance Vineyard in Bannockburn, clones 113, 115, 943 and Abel, destemmed into stainless steel tanks with 10% whole bunch approx, fermented to 13.5% alc, aged 10 months in French oak barriques, 30% new.
