“A classy pinot noir”

In stock

Doctors Flat Pinot is about Steve Davies’ pursuit of wine true to its origin—wine of terroir. The vines are organically farmed with care and harvested by hand. Steve's dedication was recently acknowledged by having this wine included in the Air New Zealand Fine Wines of New Zealand list.

Steve Davies left his job as wine maker at Carrick and set about turning his small organically farmed Bannockburn vineyard into one of the regions best. This is the eighth vintage and it is an absolute stunner. We've always loved the elegance and purity in Steve's wine. In 2015 the stars seemed to have aligned and the result is a Pinot Noir of elegance, charm, flavour length… already a bottle of absolute deliciousness.

Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Doctors Flat is an individual pursuit. Steve Davies' vines are planted in old soils on a singular site. He farms them without synthetic input, doing only what is needed to make wine that speaks for itself. The result is authentic, age-worthy and a pleasure to drink.

Aromas of rose petal, raspberry and subtle savoury/spice. Great texture amd energy on the palate with dense fruit from the red berry spectrum. Supple, fine and silky with nice freshness. This really is elegant."

"Delicately scented pinot noir with floral, red rose, dark cherry, plum, spice and thyme flavours. Supple and appealing wine with an ethereal texture. It’s deliciously drinkable now but should age gracefully. A classy pinot noir."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"This lovely, single-vineyard red was grown at Bannockburn. Refined and harmonious, it is fragrant, mouthfilling (13.5% alc/vol) and savoury wine with sweet fruit, concentrated cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing real complexity, and a finely textured, lasting finish. Fully a match for many, far-higher-priced Central Otago reds. It’s already drinking well."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Exquisitely composed and styled, the engaging bouquet shows dark cherry, thyme, black olive and truffle characters with nuances of game and toasted almonds. The palate is concentrated and multi-layered, delivering gorgeous fruit purity combined with seductive savoury notes and sensual mouthfeel. From their single vineyard in the Bannockburn district, this is superbly long and gratifying on the finish. At its best: now to 2025."

5 Stars & 19.0-/20 (95) Raymond Chan, May 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Dark, deep, ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim with some garnet hues. This has a firm, full and deeply concentrated, complex nose with an amalgam of dark-red berry fruits along with savoury dark and dried herbs, some subtle whole bunch stalk perfumes, and nuances of earth. The aromatics possess excellent density and presence, with the beginnings of interest from secondary development. Medium-full bodied, the palate has lively and vibrant flavours of complex savoury dark-red berry fruits entwined with herbs and whole bunch stalk elements, and a soft layering of earth and undergrowth elements, forming a finely concentrated and deep core. The fruit is sweetly rich and enlivened by fresh acidity and supported by fine-grained tannin extraction providing an elegant structure and grip. The flavours carry with plenty of drive and energy to a strong, complex, savoury finish. This is a rich-fruited, complex flavoured Pinot Noir with savoury red fruit, herb, earth and secondary detail on a finely concentrated, lively palate with good structure. Match with wild duck and pork, coq au vin and casseroles over the next 6-8 years. A blend of clones 115, 777 and 114 from the ‘Doctors Flat’ vineyard fermented with 30% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 25-26 days on skins and aged 12 months in 23% new French oak, then given a further 6 months in tank. 870 dozen made."

Sue Courtney,, August 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Bright translucent ruby with pinky edges. The shy bouquet is floral yet meaty and it’s silky in its flow across the palate with a juicy sweetness to the bright cherry and strawberry fruit that’s underpinned by a beautifully balanced savouriness, a salivating salinity, and a long rounded mouthcoating finish with increasing complexity and touches of anise. Tasty and totally on song."

17+/20 Julia Harding MW,, September 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Bannockburn. 30% whole bunch and 25% new oak – he is reducing the oak and increasing the whole bunch very slightly. But especially far fewer punchdowns. Mid cherry red, and more red-fruited on the nose than the 2013. The tannins show the site again but they are a little more restrained, still with the serious dry quality but not drying. Just a rather more sober style, the whole-bunch influence seems to have given greater freshness. Long, refined tannic finish."
