Dicey is the Central Otago brand of the Dicey brothers. Father Robin and sons James and Matt have had an integral involvement in many aspects of Central Otago wine since the early 1990's. The family were founding partners in Mt Difficulty with Matt being the winemaker since its inception in 1996 until now and James viticulturalist for many well known Central Otago wineries. They know their stuff!
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Wine is about place. Dicey is a place that is a rocky pocket of Central Otago: Bannockburn. It’s not easy to make wine here. Hoar frosts. Wind. Bitter cold and crackling heat. The land is unforgiving and the wines express that struggle.
The fruit comes from three vineyards started by three families transcending two generations. James and Odelle have The Inlet. Matt and Ali belong to Black Rabbit. Their pioneering parents, Robin and Margi, own their Swansong.
Dicey Bannockburn wines pay homage. They tell the annual story of the region and share the colours of each season.
The fruit was harvested midseason. Whole bunch pressed to tank. Settled for 10 days, racked with light lees for ferment. Indigenous yeast fermentation, stopped with ~30g/L natural residual sugar. Bottled unfined, filtered July 2021.
Nose — Lemon curd. Lime zest. Beeswax.
Palate — Vibrant. Rich. Crunchy"
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2021 (2021 Vintage)
"Precise and exacting aromas of sweet lemon and apple, lime- flower, pear, white peach and mineral. Youthful, fresh and harmoniously attractive. Off-dry style with residual sweetness to a medium level. Immediately contrasted by acidity highlighting flavours of green apple and lemon, minerality and white flowers. Delicious, fresh and youthful with a long finish. Best drinking from 2022 through 2029+."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2021 Vintage)
"The light lemon/green, finely poised 2021 vintage is very invitingly scented. Light-bodied and tangy, it is gently sweet (31 grams/litre of residual sugar), with very good intensity of lemony, appley flavours. Strongly varietal, it's a delicious aperitif; drink now or cellar."

"Intense, ripe, generous and complex on the nose with a diverse, alluring array of aromas including clover honey, yellow plum, lemon zest and hints of lavender shortbread. The lush, weighty, full-flavoured palate is an extension of these wonderful descriptives interwoven with a distinctive note of sweetness but balanced by salivating acidity."
