Giulio Armani has a lot of experience making natural wine. He has been the wine-maker at natural wine stalwart La Stoppa in Piacenza for a long time. Giulio has since started his own Denavolo. These wines are special. Why? Because they talk of a place. A small isolated place high up in the hills of Emilia-Romagna.
Every great wine begins with a great vineyard and Giulio has some of the most special vineyards. Perched precariously on the top of the foothills in the far western portion of Emilia-Romagna near Piacenza and not far from the sea, his vineyards start at 300m and top out at 750m. The only way to get to the top vineyards is by slogging up an old trail in an all wheel drive vehicle and hope that you make it. You reach the Denavolo vineyard first. This mature (30 year old) vineyard is where Giulio makes his flagship wine Dinavolo. Only the best grapes from the most mature vines, it is a blend of Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Ortrugo, Marsanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Maria, and some unknown local varieties. 4-7 months skin contact. Aged in botti and then bottle for 3 years before release. Serious. Serious. Serious.
Beautiful orange colour – honey, caramel, citrus with hints of mountain flowers and enough structure to tackle any steak. The finish will last long enough for you to start a conversation contemplating the meaning of natural wine and its relationship with human life and the survival of our planet.

"The Dinavolo is made with Malvasia, Ortrugo, Marsanne and other (potentially even more ancient) local grapes, co-fermented in typical field-blend fashion. The must is left in contact with the skins for 2 months, allowing for a tannic structure similar to many red wines, as well as an elevated level of aromatic intrigue. This is the secret recipe that makes me fall in love with a wine- texture and aromatics. Those tiny tannins that coat your mouth and grip the insides of your cheeks while the fruit and body of the wine luxuriates on the mid-palate. Then there’s the seduction of aromatics- exotic fruits and field flowers and freshly-trampled grass. Wild roadside mint crushed in your fingers- saffron steam from a risotto stock- cloves and cinnamon waiting for Christmas in the back of my cupboard. I did not want to stop smelling this wine. As a gorgeous friend of mine says- I wanted to put it behind my ears and wear it like perfume."
