Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Light hints of florals, petrichor, and wet stone on first breath followed by a wave of blueberry, blackberry, violets and brambly dark heady notes. The palate has a rich attack of plum and dense tannin. The mid-palate is chalky with dusty tannins and finishes with fresh, lingering acidity, leaving edgy and drying tannins on the palate, reflective of the famous Gimblett Gravels soil."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, November 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Sweetly fruited and wonderfully perfumed, the inviting bouquet shows Black Doris plum, blueberry, violet, olive and subtle toasted spice notes. It is equally attractive on the palate with splendid juicy attack and supple mouthfeel, delightfully framed by silky polished tannins. At its best: now to 2026."
91/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Ripe berries and chocolate, Doris plums and vanilla, some violet, olive and toasty wood complete the bouquet. On the palate – lots of texture then flavour with a fine dusty chalky tannin mix, medium+ acidity, dark cherry and black currant, plum and milk chocolate. Balanced and well made with decent length and concentration. Ready to enjoy from today and through 2023.. Decanting recommended."
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"The 2018 vintage is a highly approachable, but ageworthy, Hawke’s Bay red, grown in the Gimblett Gravels. It has deep, purple-flushed colour. Fresh and vibrantly fruity, it is full-bodied, with plummy, spicy aromas and flavours, showing very good ripeness and depth, and supple tannins. Best drinking 2022+."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, July 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Dark, deep ruby-black with a purple hue, lighter on edge. The nose is elegantly full with sweetly, ripened blackberries, black plums, fragrances of violet florals, entwined with Christmas spices and cedar element. The palate is elegantly powerful, with flavours of red and blackberries, boysenberries, spiced black plums, melded with violet fragrances, smokey cedar, lingers with mineral notes of graphite. Full-bodied with freshness; dark chocolate rich, dry tannins enlivened wet-stone, graphite mineral element brings lightness and elegance to the balance and structure. The fruit is perfectly ripe with brightness and balanced lacy acidity. This is an elegantly-full Malbec with flavours of black fruit, spices, balanced acidity, mineral detail on a dark chocolate dry tannin structure. Match with grilled lamb and beef over the next 4-6 years. Handpicked fruit, wild fermented to 13% alc. Aged for 12 months in neutral French oak puncheons and with a small portion in neutral oak barrels."
