Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana (C.V.N.E.) is known colloquially to most Spanish wine drinkers as Cune. The company was founded in 1879 by the Real de Asua brothers and still remains in control of their direct descendants. In the 1920s ownership started Vina Real label.

Balancing the modern and classical in Rioja red, this special Reserva has had two years in oak and two more in bottle, but it is bright-fruited as well as complex and savoury, with the tannin and oak structure to age further. Heaps of everything and not too much of anything, this perfection is why the big brother Gran Reserva of this wine was #1 in the world from Wine spectator in 2013.

92/100 Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2012 Vintage)
"The Imperial range starts with the 2012 Imperial Reserva, the usual Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo that represent the Haro style of serious wines bottled in a Bordeaux bottle. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in oak barrels for two years. The nose is quite spicy, less balsamic and with more fruit than the Gran Reserva. The palate feels very balanced, with fine tannins and good freshness, even if it ended with some warm fruit. The texture is silky and even if it's approachable now, I'd wait a little for the oak aromas to get better integrated. Drink 2017 – 2022."

92/100 Josh Raynolds, Vinous (2012 Vintage)
"Deep ruby. Ripe cherry, black currant and pungent flowers on the expansive nose, accompanied by vanilla and pipe tobacco nuances that build in the glass. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering intense, oak-tinged red and dark berry flavours and a hint of candied rose. Fine-grained tannins lend shape to the clinging finish, which shows excellent clarity and smooth, slow-building tannins. Drink 2021 – 2031."
