Te Kahu means The Cloak in Te Reo Maori and refers to the mist that envelops the Craggy Range Giants winery in the Tuki Tuki Valley, Hawkes Bay. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Deepest crimson red. Brooding aromatically with notes of cassis, black olive, dried tobacco and the faintest hint of caramel. The wine has lovely focus on the palate with dark fruits framed by fine tannins to deliver a classical structure with an excellent future ahead."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, April 2021 (2018 Vintage)
"A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, malbec, cabernet franc and petit verdot. A rich, weighty red with plum, dark berry, spice, toasty oak and liquorice flavours. Good value at this price."

93/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, December 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Red and black fruits, dried flower, vanilla and cedar perfume, shot with sweet spices. Medium-bodied, fresh but dense in flavour and tannin, boysenberry and tobacco, ash and graphite tannin, savoury in flavour, and earthy on a precise finish. So grown up. So stylish."
92/100 Huon Hooke, The Wine Front, November 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"This region has a strong suit in merlot-based blends of real class. The bouquet shows classy oak combined with berry and cassis fruit flavours, the palate soft and supple, rounded and elegant, with good ripe merlot leading the way. The tannins are abundant but also smooth and rounded."
Jamie Goode, October 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresh and supple with a floral red cherry and blackcurrant note on the nose. It’s midweight and juicy on the palate with bright cherries and plums, showing real drinkability and nice freshness and a hint of green on the finish. A really attractive, bright, easy wine."
DWWA 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"This was a wine which convinced our judges that all the hard work that has gone into Bordeaux varieties (alongside Syrah) in Gimblett Gravels is beginning to pay off. It's a very dark black-red in colour, and the 63% of Merlot sings out in its soft, seductive black-cherry and black-plum fruits. The soft wealth on the palate is very impressive too, without any rigid acidity and backed, in this case, by some discreetly textured but impressively flavoured tannins (a touch of graphite and coal dust). It's sappy and vinous towards the end: real 'pleasure wine', yet never simple. Drink 2019-2025."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Estate-grown in the Gimblett Gravels, the classy 2016 vintage of this Hawke's Bay red is Merlot-based (63 per cent), with smaller portions of Cabernet Sauvignon (18 per cent), Cabernet Franc (14 per cent), Petit Verdot (3 per cent) and Malbec (2 per cent). Matured for 10 months in oak barriques (28 per cent new), it has deep, purplish colour. Fragrant, concentrated and youthful, it's a stylish red, with strong blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, firmly structured and very age-worthy. Best drinking 2020+."
Sue Courtney, wineoftheweek.com, May 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Deeply translucent in the glass, not quite opaque. This is a deep dark brooding wine both on the nose and also initially in the palate that’s characterised by fine textured tannins and a rounded mouthfeel. Made from predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec mixed in, it offers up hints of violets, earthy brambly notes, nuances of chocolate and a suggestion of cigar box with lifted acidity brightening the finish. What stands out for me is the profound and lingering fruit purity."
94/100 Toni Paterson, The Real Review, March 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"It is the structure of this wine that sets it apart from so many others. Medium-bodied with a fine tannin frame that channels the flavours through your mouth. The fruit is dark and refined with subtle herbaceous accents. Sourced from the Gimblett Gravels vineyard. Ultimately satisfying and exceptional value."
92/100 Jamie Goode (2015 Vintage)
"Merlot-dominant blend with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Fresh and focused with a lovely gravelly edge to the lovely expressive red and black fruits. It’s really assured and harmonious with mid weight fruit working in harmony with the structure."
