Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"A refined and elegant hand-crafted Merlot dominant blend that represents both the vigneron’s art and inherent understanding of the land, ensuring ‘Sophia’ is the finest expression of the terroir and the people. ‘Sophia’, meaning ‘wisdom’ in greek mythology, pays tribute to the goddess of knowledge and experience, information and understanding – a philosophy adopted by our winemakers and viticulturists when creating this wine.
Deep dark red. The perfume is intoxicating with ripe blueberry overlaying cinnamon, brioche and a hint of leafy varietal lingering in the background. The palate sits upright and all-encompassing. Tannins are long and silky, flavour concentrated and ripe, the finish endless – the hallmarks of one of the great Sophia’s."
5 Stars, 97/100 & #1 Rated 2019 NZ Merlot Blend, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, March 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"A blend of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon from Gimblett Gravels. Supremely elegant wine with an array of dark berry and spice flavours. A youthful wine from a top vintage and with masses of cellaring potential. This really is a classic."
Rated Outstanding & 96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Deep hues of purple and ruby with a complex and inviting bouquet of black currant and cassis, blackberry and spiced dark plums, smoky spicy barrel scents and concentrated violet and stony soils back bone. On the palate – very youthful and with excellent potential, a wine that needs cellar time to bring all the attributes together. A firm texture from fruit and wood tannins, plenty of fresh wood with spices and nut flavours, clove and toast. The core of this wine is the concentration of fruit flavours – all reflecting the bouquet and leading to a lengthy finish. This wine needs time and will reward those who can wait. Best drinking from 2025 through 2035+. Decant for service before then and enjoy with food.
95/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, March 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Espresso, chocolate, plum, pencil shavings, pepper, violet and black fruit. Fleshy, black fruit and coffee, earthy feel to it, ripe and silty tannin, dense and savoury, good amount of chew and black olive flavour on a long and firm finish. Modern right bank style by way of Hawkes Bay."
