Selected for the 2019 Fine Wines of New Zealand List

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Le Sol (french: the soil) is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation with its gravelly soils attracting the sun in summer and insulating the vines in winter. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s.

Inky purple red. Enticing aromatics of boysenberry, blueberry, violets, clove and lightly seared meat. The wine exhibits a richness of fruit yet carries an ethereal quality as the fine grained tannins dance gracefully across the palate."

5 Stars & 98/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2016 Vintage)
"One of the stars in a tasting of every vintage back to the first in 2001. Attractively perfumed and typically dense, rich syrah with a lovely texture and firm, rounded tannins. Powerful yet elegant wine with plum, berry and mixed spice flavours."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"This famous Syrah impresses with its lovely fragrance and finesse. Estate-grown in the Gimblett Gravels of Hawke's Bay, the densely packed 2016 vintage was hand-picked and matured for 17 months in French oak barriques (35 per cent new). Still a baby, it is dark and purple-flushed, mouthfilling and supple, with highly concentrated plum and black-pepper flavours, refined tannins and a lasting finish. It needs time; open 2021+. (There is no 2017.)"

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Powerful and focused bouquet of pepper, dark berries and currants. Nutty oaky aromas with a roasted walnut and smoky wood scents; a core of black currant and blue berry, pepper, clove, vanilla and smoked violet. A hint of balsamic rounds out the bouquet. Dry, loads of texture from abundant acidity and firm youthful tannins securing the backbone of the wine as significant and an example that is very young indeed. The package of flavours and textures are all present – all this wine needs is time. Decant for service with high protein food. Best from 2022 through 2030."

5 Stars & 19.5/20 (98) Raymond Chan, September 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Full, near saturated black-red colour with purple hues on the rim, youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly proportioned but very tightly bound and intense with concentrated aromas of ripe blackberry fruit along with notes of boysenberries and blueberries, harmoniously intermixed with a layering of Asian spices, liquorice and piquant black pepper entwined with violet florals. The aromatics are refined and elegant and seamless in expression, and feature fragrance. Medium-full bodied, the palate has succulently rich and luscious, near opulent flavours of ripe blackberries and boysenberries with blue fruit detail, along with subtle raspberry elements, entwined with Asian spices and black pepper, with violet florals. The fruit has richness and vitality and an effusive energy forming a rich, packed heart. The fruit is underlined by fine-grained, powdery tannin extract, balancing structure and integrated acidity. The wine carries to a very long, spicy, vibrant and sustained finish. This is a wonderfully rich and refined Syrah with succulently ripe black fruits, spices and pepper on a very fine-structured palate. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 8-10+ years. Hand-picked MS clone Syrah fruit fermented in open top French oak cuves with 20% whole bunches to 13.3% alc., the wine aged 17 months in 35% new French oak barriques."

93/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, June 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Warm spice scents, red berries, faint choc-berry notes, pepper. The palate is juicy but tightens on silty tannins, succulent is a pretty good word, rich but fresh fruit character, long in flavour too, finishes tight and squeaky. Lovely wine here."
