This is an absolute brilliant price on Coopers Creek's top of the line Chardonnay. Originally sourced from Swamp Road it is now from Cooper's excellent Middle Road Vineyard next to the Limeworks in Havelock North so you get all that limestone derived focus, complexity and deliciousness. Being 100% barrel fermented and aged in 30% new oak it has plenty of body and oomph but still a nod towards elegance and restraint.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Year after year the fruit from this vineyard exhibits ripe lemon and grapefruit characters. This is interwoven with subtle oak and lees and MLF derived creaminess. Harmony and balance have become two of the hallmarks of our Swamp Reserve style. This wine has fineness and structure, yet is also incredibly complex and long.
In 2018, we made two, very careful, hand pick passes through our Swamp Reserve block. Mother nature was not kind to us in 2018, but, the vineyard team worked tirelessly to ensure that the fruit they harvested was pristine. It worked! In the face of adversity, we harvested some of the best fruit we have seen from this block. The juices went off to French oak (around 30% new) for fermentation and MLF. The malos were very fast in 2018 and were all done by the start of May. The wines then stayed in barrel, on lees, until 27th February 2019. Our 2018 Swamp Reserve Chardonnay was bottled on 16th May 2019."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, August 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Rich, smooth and moderately complex chardonnay with peach, stone fruit, oyster shell, mineral, lime, hazelnut and spicy oak flavours. Nicely balanced with a lingering finish. Plenty of weight and flavour. Impressive."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"Based on the winery's best Hawke's Bay grapes, this seductive Chardonnay has a finely judged balance of rich, citrusy, peachy fruit flavours and toasty oak. Hand-picked in the company's Middle Road Vineyard at Havelock North, it is fermented and matured in French oak barriques (30 per cent new in 2018), and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. The 2018 vintage is a very classy, harmonious wine. Full-bodied, it has concentrated, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, gentle biscuity and smoky notes adding complexity, and a finely balanced, lasting finish. Best drinking 2022+."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, January 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Complex, engaging and seductive, the bouquet shows golden peach, mango, vanilla custard and roasted hazelnut characters. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent fruit weight and concentration, together with creamy mouthfeel and brilliantly pitched acidity. It is opulent and graceful at the same time with plenty of delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2021."
