Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Our Swamp Reserve Chardonnay comes from a single vineyard on the Havelock North hills. It is a very sheltered north facing site, with dry-grown vines on Toupo pumice soils amongst limestone outcrops. This is a rich and full-bodied dry white wine and is a great match for fish, pork and poultry dished. Serve chilled and enjoy into the medium term."

5 Stars & 19.0-/20 (95) Raymond Chan, September 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Full, even, light golden-yellow colour with some depth. The nose is softly full, broad and voluminous with gentle, harmonious layers of ripe yellow stonefruits and tropical fruits along with subtle, savoury reductive elements, mealy complexities and nutty oak. This has detail and finesse. Medium-full bodied, the palate has layered flavours of ripe white and yellow stonefruits, and tropical fruit, harmoniously melded with nutty oak and creamy barrel-ferment elements. The flavours form a rounded but concentrated core that unfolds richness and detail. The mouthfeel possesses a fine acid line that provides freshness and linearity. The wine flows smoothly to a gentle, elegant, refined finish. This is a refined and elegantly concentrated, complex detailed and harmoniously balanced Chardonnay. Match with roasted pork and veal over the next 4-5 years. Fruit from a single site on the Havelock North hills, fully barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months on less in approx. 30% new French oak barrels, undergoing batonnage and full MLF."

4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Based on the winery's best Hawke's Bay grapes, this seductive Chardonnay has a finely judged balance of rich, citrusy, peachy fruit flavours and toasty oak. Hand-picked in the company's Middle Road Vineyard at Havelock North, it is fermented and matured in French oak barriques (40 per cent new in 2016), and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. The youthful 2016 vintage is typically weighty and generous. Light lemon/green, it is fragrant and full-bodied, with ripe stone-fruit flavours, seasoned with biscuity, toasty oak, excellent complexity and a long finish. Already enjoyable, it should break into full stride during 2019."
