Primitivo comes from the Latin “primativus” meaning “first to ripen” and it is one of the first grape varieties to be harvested in Italy: in Puglia, its main area, this means August. This variety arrived was officially recognized in Puglia in 1881 but had been in the region for hundreds of years and has Croatian parentage. Primitivo is a dark-skinned grape known for producing inky, opulent, full-bodied, wines with ripe blueberry/black cherry characters with hints of Mediterranean vegetation and powerful but well-rounded tannins. It is a fantastic match for red meat and strong cheeses and offers more flavour for your dollar than virtually any other wine on the market.
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Combining fruit richness with savoury complexity, the wine shows dark cherry, bouquet garni, smoked meat and toasted nut aromas, followed by a silky-smooth palate that's juicy and rounded. Well framed by fine, grainy tannins, finishing long and attractively dry. At its best: now to 2026."
89/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Varietal fruity and ‘old world’ like with an earthy then fruity quality. Aromas and flavours of dried raspberry and plums, some black berry fruits then wet clay earthy flavours. Tannins have powdery texture and a gentle firmness with medium+ acid line. Dry on the finish with medium length, balanced and ready to drink with or without food. Best drinking from 2024 through 2027+."
