Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Dark on the nose, with appealing aromatics of black cherry and bramble fruit. The palate reveals layers of florals, gentle spice, melding with notes of boysenberry and doris plum and framed by finely realised, silky tannins and juicy acidity."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, March 2020 (2018 Vintage)
"Elegant pinot noir with ripe cherry, plum, violet, anise and spicy oak flavours. Restrained, sophisticated and harmonious wine that is seductive rather than aggressively attention-grabbing. Nicely layered finish that offers length, power and many subtle flavours."
91/100 Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, NZ Pinot Noir Tasting, April 2021 (2018 Vintage)
"2018 Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir gained high points from Bourne, who found, “A complex amalgam of soft red fruits – strawberry, raspberry and red cherry – autumnal leaves and damp earth. The palate echoes the nose with a subtle/savoury profile and an acid etched finish.” Those red fruit aromas were deceptively light, as the flavours had good depth, while the overall impression was of suppleness and charming balance, with fine tannins."
90/100 Wine Enthusiast (2018 Vintage)
"Although initially quite closed and reductive, give this time in the glass or decanter and it soon reveals plenty of New World fruitiness with a dose of Burgundian funk. Ripe cherries, violets, baking spices and slightly mealy, vanillin oak on the nose lead to a palate that is plush and ripe yet lifted by a crunch of acidity. Savoury tannins and earthy, mineral streaks add complexity. Simultaneously approachable and austere, this could be drunk now but will improve with age."

4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Consistently classy. Grown at sites on the cooler, more clay-influenced south side of the Wairau Valley, the 2017 vintage was matured in French oak barriques (25 per cent new). Full, bright ruby, it is fragrant, mouthfilling, fresh and supple, with plum, cherry and spice flavours, showing good complexity, delicacy and vigour. Still youthful, it's a finely structured wine, likely to be at its best 2021+."
93/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, June 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Cherry-berry scents, fragrant rosy notes, sweet spice and a lifted orange juice kind of character. Palate is quite strict but you could say shapely too, elegant, fine boned. Squirts through the palate in a rush of pleasant sour cherry and amaro-like herbal character with licks of clove. Nicely put together, though the finish is a little tart."
4 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, June 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Three years of quiet time in bottle has allowed the subtle spices in this pinot noir to knit together nicely. Perfumed with baked berries, soft cherry characters, savoury tones and sandalwood, while the palate is slippery and slick. Ribbon-like as each sip slides down. A blockbuster is not what you’ll find here, rather the 2016 is a lightly-styled vintage that’ll absolutely win with something nice and nibbly like hoisin duck pancakes."
16/20 Tim Jackson MW, JancisRobinson.com, July 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Mid-purple. Brambly, forest fruits, with some leafy touches. Cinnamon-vanilla oak, with some chocolate. Attractive and fruit-forward. Brisk acidity, somewhat primary, moderate tannins. Decent length. Appealing and polished. Neat, even if not the most profound."
