Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"A wine that has precision and minerality. Our 2017 Sauvignon Blanc combines aromas of yellow flowers and white peaches on the nose. The textured palate is intense with creamy layers of stone fruit. The Churton Sauvignon Blanc finishes crisp with wonderful length and drive through the palate.

Our distinctive hillside vineyard above the Waihopai Valley was planted in 2000 with a European approach, close vine spacing and high density (approx. 5,000/ha). We manage the vineyard according to principles of biodynamics and organics. 2017 was a challenging vintage where the resilience of our vines was clearly demonstrated. Biodynamics encourages farm diversity and for us one of the clear benefits are that vines take up less water in rain events thanks to the inter row plants competing for their drink. Grapes also have thicker skins making them more resistant to splitting. Our 2017 Sauvignon Blanc achieved good balance with amazing flavour at lower sugar and acid levels than usual.

Churton incorporates 10 distinctive Sauvignon Blanc blocks and we harvest them each separately. In 2017 the Churton Sauvignon Blanc cuveé included eight blocks. Hand harvesting gives us the opportunity to be very selective in the vineyard, a vital process in 2017 where weather conditions were challenging. Our fruit was hand sorted in the winery before a gentle whole bunch pressing. 15% was fermented in a mix of used and new 500 litre French oak barrels with indigenous yeast and some cultured yeast. The balance was fermented and aged in stainless steel. All wine aged on lees for six months prior to blending. Our 2017 Sauvignon Blanc was gently fined to help clarify before bottling in November".

95/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, September 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Always a high quality expression of the Marlborough staple, indeed, one of the leading white wines in Marlborough, full stop. Very judicious winemaking, outstanding biodynamic site, detail in winemaking overlay. Took me immediately to all the producers I love drinking from Loire.

Layered with flavour, texture, incredible length, this wine again disproves naysayers about Marlborough and the halcyon white variety. Brilliant texture, electric just ripe yellow fruit fruit flavour, very faint savoury detail, light herbal lift, seamless saline acid profile and a very light chew to texture. A bon vivant of a wine, exuberant in perfume and palate, but serious, complex, incredibly good. Would stand tall amongst any of the great sauvignon blancs anywhere. Outstanding release".

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"This producer aims for a style that 'combines the renowned flavour and aromatic intensity of Marlborough fruit with the finesse and complexity of fine European wines'. Estate-grown on an elevated site in the Waihopai Valley, it is hand-harvested and a small part of the blend (15 per cent in 2017) is fermented and lees-aged in seasoned and new French oak puncheons. Certified organic, the 2017 vintage is a distinctive wine, still unfolding. Bright, light lemon/green, it is fragrant and mouthfilling, with intense, ripely herbaceous flavours, subtle, biscuity notes adding complexity and a lingering, fully dry, finely textured finish. Best drinking mid-2019+".

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, November 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Rich and concentrated organic sauvignon blanc that was hand-picked and includes a 15% component of barrel-fermented wine. It’s a pleasingly textural and complex sauvignon, with good varietal tree fruit and citrus flavours plus an attractive seasoning of nutty yeast lees character".

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, November 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Delightful enticing aromas of SB with a a complex bouquet of white flowers, pear, apple, grapefruit and fresh herbs. Intense, crisp and dry on the palate; flavours that match the nose with a little more grassy vegetal attributes emerging. High acidity, some wood spices, a wine with character and power. Drink now and through 2025".
