Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2023
Gold Medal – Hawkes Bay Wine Awards 2023

The Church Road Grand Reserve Chardonnay has carved out an enviable reputation as one of Hawkes Bay and New Zealand's very best.

Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Church Road Grand Reserve wines are produced only in exceptional vintages. The very best low-cropping vineyard blocks are targeted for selective hand-harvesting to yield wines with the greatest possible flavour, depth and concentration. In the winery these wines are made using small batch, traditional winemaking techniques that emphasise texture, structure and subtle complexity, while still letting the fruit shine through.

A fuller bodied Chardonnay balanced by gentle, fresh acidity and a spine of slate like minerality. Fresh zesty citrus and citrus blossom notes are to the fore this year with riper, richer stonefruit underlying and providing extra depth. The fruit is overlaid with complexities of roasted nuts, toasted brioche, and a wisp of struck flint and gun smoke. Already drinking exceptionally well, with careful cellaring we expect this wine to continue to mature gracefully for 5 years or more from vintage date."

Best in Show & 97/100 Decanter World Wine Awards, June 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"With two wines in this year's Best In Show selection, Hawkes's Bay has excelled — and our judges, too, were particularly happy that the North Island winegrowers’ slow, painstaking work teasing Chardonnay levels ever higher are patently paying off. This outstanding wine has a bright gold colour with faint lime glints. Freshness and richness are beautifully paired in the aromas — to an extent which is perhaps only possible south of the equator in New Zealand. That gives this wine a memorable classicism, Burgundy-lovers might note. In the mouth, it is concentrated and confident, once again striding down that line between the fresh and the rich to vivacious effect. No hurry to drink: a year or two's cellar softening will bring great benefits here."

96/100 IWSC 2019 (2020 Vintage)
"A rich, opulent style, with notes of oatmeal, vanilla, baked apple, cream, sweet spices and lemon curd. Well integrated and balanced, with lovely fruit, fresh acidity, excellent structure, nice savoury notes and a very long finish."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2020 Vintage)
"This very classy wine sits above the McDonald Series (but below Tom and 1 Single Vineyard) in the Church Road hierarchy. Still unfolding, the 2020 vintage was grown mostly in the lower reaches of the Tuki Tuki Valley, hand-picked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels. Bright, light yellow/green, it is a powerful, youthful wine, with mouthfilling body, concentrated, ripe stonefruit and toasty oak flavours, fresh acidity and a long finish. Showing impressive vigour and complexity, it should be at its best mid-2023+."

Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 Vintage)
"Complex, bold, varietal, smoky and toasty spices bouquet. An attention seeking aroma package leads to a full-bodied expression on the palate with flavours of roasted stone fruits and barrel spices, fine wood tannins and contrasting acid line. Peach and baked apple, grapefruit and quince, a touch of honey and tropical fruit. A delicious, fresh and textured wine ticking all the boxes of flavour and texture, power and panache."

95/100 & Top Rank, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2019 Vintage)
"An intense, silken-textured, fruit-focused wine from an exceptionally good vintage."

96/100 International Wine Challenge 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"A perfectly formed Chardonnay with youthful fruit and a mineral edge. really pure fruit flavours with sophisticated balance and tangy flavours with a nice length."

5 Stars Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, July 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"The Church Road Grande Reserve Chardonnay 2018 is made from a blend of grapes grown on 50% on Tuki Tuki vineyard and 50% on a vineyard next to Te Mata Estate. It’s a creamy, smooth-textured chardonnay, with subtle tree fruit and peach fruit flavours interwoven with fresh-baked bread and toasted nut flavours. A fine-grained, moderately concentrated wine supported by deliciously fruity acidity."

Six Nations Wine Challenge 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Church Road Grand Reserve wines are produced only in exceptional vintages. The very best low-cropping vineyard blocks are targeted for selective hand-harvesting to yield wines with the greatest possible flavour, depth and concentration. In the winery these wines are made using small batch, traditional winemaking techniques that emphasise texture, structure and subtle complexity, while still letting the fruit shine through.

A flavourful, multidimensional Chardonnay with a core of ripe stonefruit and fragrant citrus, overlaid with aromas of roasted nuts, toasted brioche, subtle creaminess and a hint of smoke. The palate is powerful yet restrained, with fine texture, great length and balanced fresh acidity."
