Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2018

Charles Wiffen is a classic label and a Marlborough Chardonnay made in a classic style. This vintage release is sure to please its many loyal and devoted fans. Stylistically consistent, it is once again rich and full with concentrated fruit, honeyed oak, a touch of nuttiness, and a long creamy finish.

The wine is made by James Rowan at the West Brook winery in Waimauku in West Auckland. In return, West Brook are able to access a supply of the top quality Wiffen fruit for their own label. It’s an arrangement that has served both parties extremely well for several years, as the Marlborough-fruited wines under both brands have been awarded many gold medals and trophies. James thinks it important that the Charles Wiffen wines express their Marlborough heritage and terroir so the fruit for the Wiffen bottlings is handled extra sensitively to ensure that provenance prevails over the winemakers’ hands.

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"The Wiffen family have farmed their Marlborough property, St. Clair, since 1907 the vineyard being established in 1980. This wine has aromas of nectarine, fig, almond meal and hints of vanillin. Ten months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barriques gives a balanced and elegant palate with a soft lingering, nutty and seductive finish."

Sue Courtney,, October 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Sweet nutty oak and subtle orange zest fills the bouquet and its full of juicy peach and nectarine in the rich, creamy palate with a delectable nutty oak undercurrent that lets the vibrant fruit sing."

5 Stars & 18.5+/20 (94) Raymond Chan, October 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, even, light lemon-gold colour with some depth, paler on the edge. The nose is elegantly proportioned with softly concentrated and packed aromas with layers of yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits harmoniously melded with subtle, fragrant nutty oak along with mealy and toasty complexities. This has a completeness to the expression. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a taut and concentrated heart with intensely packed, but stylishly presented, layered flavours of white and yellow stonefruits, citrus fruit, creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak all interwoven and harmoniously balanced. The palate flows smoothly and seamlessly with some underlying power and fine, lacy acidity, leading to an elegant, sustained finish. This is a beautifully harmonious and integrated Chardonnay with stonefruit, citrus fruit, creamy and nutty oak and mealy detail, the wine quite complete in itself. Serve with grilled or roasted poultry or pork dishes over the next 4 years. Fruit from the Wiffen ‘Omaka’ block, fully barrel-fermented to 13.7% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 20% new French oak barriques, undergoing batonnage and full MLF."
