We heard about the Calabria Private Bin wines through the grapevine as such and after a bit of research decided they would be a great addition to our range. So we asked the question, and the New Zealand importer/distributor of Calabria and Three Bridges wines was most obliging and now here they are. As the winery says… "The Calabria Private Bin range is dedicated to the founders of Calabria Family Wines, Francesco and Elizabeth Calabria, it is an expression of the Calabria Family’s Italian heritage, passion and winemaking tradition, who are leading the way in alternative grape varieties." And see below what the critics say….
Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
"It’s one of those in-the-know brands; the prices are low but the quality strike-rate is high."
Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
"Broken record here, but this range, Calabria Private Bin, wins my pound-for-pound, best value range in Australia. Small batch winemaking applied to interesting varieties. Unreal."
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Nero d'Avola is a red wine variety, originating from Sicily and is one of Italy's most important indigenous varieties. It is named after Avola in the far south of Sicily and its wines are compared to New World Shiraz, with sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavours. The black grape of Avola appears to have been selected by growers near Avola several hundred years ago. Initially, it was confined to the southern tip of the island.
The idyllic Riverina climate of sunshine and rich red soils allows the soft black berries of Nero d’Avola to express red cherry and dried herb aromas; the supple palate is long and gentle with fine grained tannins."
