We heard about the Calabria Private Bin wines through the grapevine as such and after a bit of research decided they would be a great addition to our range. So we asked the question, and the New Zealand importer/distributor of Calabria and Three Bridges wines was most obliging and now here they are. As the winery says… "The Calabria Private Bin range is dedicated to the founders of Calabria Family Wines, Francesco and Elizabeth Calabria, it is an expression of the Calabria Family’s Italian heritage, passion and winemaking tradition, who are leading the way in alternative grape varieties." And see below what the critics say….

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
"It’s one of those in-the-know brands; the prices are low but the quality strike-rate is high."

Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
"Broken record here, but this range, Calabria Private Bin, wins my pound-for-pound, best value range in Australia. Small batch winemaking applied to interesting varieties. Unreal."

Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Aglianico is a red-grape variety that is widespread in Southern Italy. It is of extremely ancient origin and some experts argue that it was cultivated in the early period of Roman history and constituted the principal grape in the production of Falernium, a wine that was celebrated by the ancient poets. The variety was introduced to Italy by the Greeks with the transformation of the name from Hellenica into Hellanica and then into Aglianico occurring at the end of the 15th century. The Calabria Aglianico is a bright cherry colour showing black cherry and ripe plum fruit aromas with savoury coffee and smokey notes. Its broody complexity, round body and savoury Italian-esque tannins make for a classy, elegant wine".

90/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, January 2016 (2015 Vintage)
"Bright, perfumed, buoyant – it’s a party straight up. Indeed as soon as you put it anywhere near your nose you’re aware that you’ve got a live one on your hands. It’s light in the mouth, in flavour terms, but it carries its lightness, if that makes sense. And it’s another thing: tannic. Almost fiercely so. It needs food. Which is a good thing."
