85% Cabernet Sauvignon & 15% Merlot
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Both varieties were tank fermented on their skins at 25 – 30 degrees Celsius for at least 14 days with daily pump overs, then the juice was drained off and the grapes were pressed. Only the best pressings were added back to the free run juice. Malolactic fermentation then took place before it was transferred into new French oak barrels for 15 months maturation.
Almost black in colour. Framed in new French oak, the 2016 ‘Reserve Vintage’ Cabernet / Merlot is bold and generous, the 2016 Vintage Reserve ‘Gold Label’ Cabernet / Merlot has dark characters with elevated blackberry, mocha, dried herbs and cigar box which rest on a bed of ripe and enticing tannins, along with new French oak notes resulting in a long lingering finish. The new Cabernet Sauvignon LC10 clone has introduced a concentration which will ensure its longevity…, be it majestic!"
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"Brookfields' top red is one of the most powerful, long-lived reds in Hawke's Bay. At its best, it is a thrilling wine – robust, tannin-laden and overflowing with very rich cassis, plum and mint flavours. The grapes are sourced from the Lyons family's sloping, north-facing vineyard at Bridge Pa, and the wine is matured for a year in predominantly new French oak barriques. The 2016 vintage is fragrant, with deep, purple-flushed colour. Full-bodied, it has fresh, notably concentrated, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, firm tannins, and obvious potential. A powerful young red, set for a long life, it's best opened 2021+."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, November 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"A magnificent Bordeaux-style red; the beautifully expressed bouquet shows cassis, dark plum, cigar, cedar and vanilla characters, followed by a concentrated palate that is superbly weighted and richly fruited. The wine delivers excellent depth and generous mouthfeel, wonderfully complemented by silky texture and fine, chalky tannins, leading to an impressively long engaging finish. At its best: 2019 to 2028."
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 (94) Raymond Chan, October 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Full, dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, near impenetrable at the heart, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is very taut and initially shy in expression, but seamlessly unfolds to show integrated aromas of soft blackberries and blackcurrants, nuances of plum, dark herbs with mint, and complexing pencilly oak. The aromatics unfold in detail with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly proportioned with finely concentrated and packed flavours of ripe blackcurrants with blackberry and plum notes along with subtle herb nuances. Fine, pencilly oak adds a layer of interest. The fruit is underlined by plenty of fine-grained, powdery tannin extraction providing an elegant, stylish core with integrated acidity. The wine carries to a sustained finish of blackcurrants, plums and herbs. This is an elegantly proportioned and finely concentrated Cabernet/Merlot with black berry fruits and plums with herb and pencilly oak interest on a very fine-grained palate. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-8+ years. The ‘Gold Label’ wine. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon clone LC10 from the ‘Ohiti Estate’ and 15% Merlot clone 481 from the Tuki Tuki Valley, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in predominantly new French oak."
