85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo & 5% Graciano
Located in Oyón (Álava), Conde Valdemar boasts a very long winemaking tradition – they celebrated their 125 anniversary in 2014. Valdemar owns 245 hectares under vine in the three Rioja subareas, the oldest of which were planted in the late 1970s. Most of the vines are located in Rioja Alavesa. This is an exclusive selection from those old Rioja Alavesa vineyards.
The 2004 Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo, and 5% Graciano aged for 26 months in French and American oak. Made in a traditional style, it shows aromatic complexity from its extended aging. Cedar, leather, Asian spices, incense, black cherry, and blackberry lead to a rich, elegant, plush wine in the style of the superb 2004 vintage. Flavourful, stylish, and lengthy, it will continue to blossom with several more years of cellaring and drink well through 2024.
96/100 Tim Atkin MW, Rioja 2019 Special Report (2004 Vintage)
"2004 was one of the great post-war Rioja vintages, so it’s no surprise that this majestic wine, still available in tiny quantities, is so fresh. Denser and richer than the 2001, it’s wonderfully complex and balsamic, with notes of Asian spices, fresh tobacco and sweet red fruits. 2019 – 2024."
