Founded by Julian Murua and located in the heart of Rioja Alavesa in Elciego next to the River Mayor. The wines of Bodegas Muriel offer exceptional value and a lovely fruity style of easy drinking Rioja. From a very good Rioja vintage this wine offers juicy red fruit flavours with spice and leather notes, soft tannins and a lovely ripe, long, satisfying length.
Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"A selection of grapes from vineyards in the Rioja Alta and the Rioja Alavesa, planted in very poor calcareous soils of a clay loam texture. The vines are grown mainly using a traditional goblet-pruned system. The wine fermentation and maceration process is carried out during 15 days in stainless steel vats, with a daily pumping over routine for the optimum extraction of colour and tannins. The wine is matured for 12 months, in 225 litre capacity American oak barrels.
To the eye, it has a middle layer of bright cherry colour. The aroma of very fine ageing (vanilla, coconut, roasted coffee) is combined with notes of ripe red berries and liquorice. The palate is wide and elegant, with a clean aftertaste, persistent and of pleasant memory."
91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"It is attractively fruited and savoury at the same time, showing dark fruit characters with leather, mixed spice and olive notes on the nose. The palate delivers juicy fruit flavours together with smooth mouthfeel and chalky tannins, finishing dry and lingering. A lovely food wine. At its best: now to 2021."
90/100 Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, May 2020 (2016 Vintage)
"This red is balanced and polished. Black cherry and plum flavours mingle with liquorice and forest floor notes, finishing with floral and mineral accents. Shows a firm structure and fresh acidity. Drink now through 2026. A nice balance of fruit and savoury flavours. Accessible and ready to pair with food.”
