90% Viura (Macabeo), Garnacha Blanca & Malvasía
A beautiful white Rioja, Muga reject 50% of their superb fruit for this high quality white. It is mostly the Viura grape (Macabeo) fermented on fine lees in new French oak. Hardly 'oaky' though, it is instead crisp and delicately fruited, floral and mineral. Perfect for aperitif or tapa.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Pale yellow in colour with greenish glints denoting its youthfulness and freshness. A clean nose with intense, complex aromas of white blossom, American lime citrus notes and slight toasted nuances coming through from the oak. On the palate, it can be defined as a fresh wine with good acidity, a silky texture and reminders of fruit such as pears. A perfect match for vegetable dishes, rice, fish and tapas."
92/100 James Suckling (2018 Vintage)
"A very bright and citrusy white Rioja that shows green apples, lemons and cherry blossom. Medium body, steely acidity and a fine finish, soaked in crabapple flavours. Drink now."
90/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2018 Vintage)
"2018 is a year with more freshness and is perhaps better for whites and light wines than for powerful reds. Bottled a couple of months before I tasted it, the 2018 Muga Blanco is mostly Viura with some 10% Garnacha Blanca (a grape that is going to grow in percentage) and maybe 5% Malvasía Riojana and a pinch of the other white grapes. It's clean, floral, fresh and very easy to drink, with focused flavours and a pleasant bitterness on the finish. It feels quite complete, harmonious and fresh. 240,000 bottles produced."
