Hecula, resplendent under its new and snazzy label, is a fantastic value red wine with serious character from Yecla in Spain's south east. Brooding dark fruits come together with brighter red fruits and smoky, meaty, savoury notes to give a wine of depth and interest. The region of Yecla is dry and sunny and ideal for growing the Monastrell variety. These low yielding, old vines grow on sandy-stony, limestone soils and give intense concentrated fruit.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Intense and shiny cherry red colour. On the nose, it blooms pleasant ripe red fruit aromas, sweet spices. It has very elegant and integrated wooden notes that do not cover its intense fruitiness. It is well-balanced, fresh, with elegant soft tannins and a good acidity. Long and very well structured."
Sue Courtney, wineoftheweek.com, January 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"This is a dark red colour, the bouquet is savoury and earthy with a waft of leather, sweet spiced tobacco, some kind of bramble berry and a hint of mocha. The taste is mellow and spicy with underlying earthiness and a smooth tannin flow. A medium-bodied food friendly red with light tannins and a juicy finish."
91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"An attractively expressed monastrell, the fragrant bouquet shows dark cherry, cranberry, thyme and smoked game characters with hints of hazelnut and cocoa. The palate delivers lovely fruity mouthfeel and silky texture, leading to a lengthy tasty finish. This is modern and very approachable. At its best: now to 2019."
