Gold Medal – Aotearoa Regional Wine Competition 2022
Always one of our favourite Pinot Gris. The Moutere clays of Nelson seem to be ideally suited to the production of Pinot Gris and Blackenbrook have produced another beautiful wine in 2022 to follow the success they have achieved in the last few vintages. Michael Cooper has noted it as "an emerging classic" such is this wines consistency. Luscious and just off-dry in style.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Our Pinot Gris has an enticing nose of pear, quince and honeysuckle with hints of almond and ginger. The palate is elegantly textured, finishing bright and refreshingly dry. It’s our Moutere clay soils, the dazzling Nelson sun and the finger prints of our team that make our wines unique. We hope you’ll enjoy."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, September 2022 (2022 Vintage)
"Lovely bouquet of fresh white fleshed stone fruit, citrus and lots of white spice. There’s a light lees quality and mineral notes of wet stone and clay. Crisp, salivating, refreshing and just dry on the palate. Acidity contrasts any moments of residual sweetness and with a core of ripe white fleshed orchard fruits this wine has a lot to offer from mouthfeel to fruit intensity, spice and finish. Drink from 2023 through 2027."
4 ½ Stars Yvonne Lorkin, December 2022 (2022 Vintage)
"Forget about the common description of ‘pear’ for pinot gris, because this wine is the whole darn orchard! Nashi, Golden Delicious apples, quince, yellow pears and hints of peach all feature in this new release grown in the mineral-rich Moutere Clays of Nelson. Dry, deliciously textural and nicely balanced, it’s a pinot gris that’ll suit any season or occasion. Cleansing and satisfying."
Reviews for the 2021 vintage below…
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2021 Vintage)
"Estate-grown and hand-picked from 20 year-old vines, the 2021 vintage was hand-picked and handled in a mix of tanks (95 per cent) and old oak barrels (5 per cent). Bright, light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling, with strong peach, pear, lychee and spice flavours, showing excellent varietal character, a touch of complexity, and an off-dry (9 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. Full of youthful vigour, it should develop well."
