Trophy for Champion Pinor Noir – New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2018
Gold Medal – New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2018

The Netherwood vineyard is situated on Reeces Road in Omihi and was planted by Russell Black and Danny Schuster in 1986. The vines are very close planted, on their own root stock and un-irrigated. Yields can be minuscule. This is the most ‘pinotesque’ of Black Estate's three vineyard Pinot Noirs with that alluring and evocative contrast of power and elegance and daresay, Burgundian character. There is an earthy, savoury element to go with the dried herb and fruits flavours. A special wine of delicate power.

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, September 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Tight, fresh and vibrant pinot noir with floral, violet, cherry, berry and subtle spicy flavours. A supple wine that’s elegant rather than blockbuster, and all the better for it. Can be appreciated now but should develop well with bottle age. "

5 Stars & 19.0/20 Raymond Chan, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"Even ruby-red colour, lighter on the rim with purple hues. This has a very elegant and fragrant nose with ethereal aromas of red cherry and berry fruit interwoven with dark-red florals, attractively piquant fresh herbs and a lifted floral amalgam at the core. A little oak lift emerges. This is refined, perfumed and has intensity with penetrating aromatics. Medium-bodied, the palate has vibrant and lively, ethereal and aromatic fruit flavours of red cherries and berries interwoven with an array of florals intermingling with fresh herbal notes. The fruit forms an elegantly concentrated core and is supported by very fine-grained, powdery tannins and refreshing acidity. This has considerable linearity, carrying the wine to a long and sustained, tightly bound and poised finish. This is an elegant, refined Pinot Noir with an ethereal array of red cherry and berry fruits with floral aromatics on a lively, fresh and fine-grained palate. Serve with poultry and pork dishes over the next 6-8 years. Ungrafted Pinot Noir fruit, vines planted in 1986, hand-picked and fermented with 100% whole bunches by vineyard derived yeast to 12.0% alc., the wine on skins 28 days and aged 12 months in seasoned French oak. 289 dozen made."

5 Stars & 97/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2017 (2015 Vintage)
"From the high density (4,500 vines per hectare) hillside vineyard planted in 1986; 100% whole cluster ferment using indigenous yeasts; unfined and unfiltered. A pinot for grownups. Engaging, intriguing and totally seductive, the bouquet shows dark berry, dried herb, game, nutmeg, black olive and floral notes. It is concentrated, expansive and mouthfilling on the palate, and exhibits layers of fine texture and spicy, savoury flavours, wonderfully supported by fine, classically drying tannins. A very brave pinot offering magnificent detail and symphonic flavours. The vineyard will be fully certified organic in March 2017. At its best: 2018 to 2027."

4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 Vintage)
"From the first hill-grown vineyard in North Canterbury, the 2015 vintage was hand-harvested from ungrafted, unirrigated vines. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for a year in seasoned oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is a ruby-hued, medium-bodied wine, with very youthful, cherryish, plummy flavours, savoury notes adding complexity, fresh acidity, and a finely poised finish. Best drinking 2019+."
