The Netherwood vineyard is situated on Reeces Road in Omihi and was planted by Russell Black and Danny Schuster in 1986. The vines are very close planted, on their own root stock and un-irrigated. Yields can be minuscule. This is the most ‘pinotesque’ of Black Estate's three vineyard Pinot Noirs with that alluring and evocative contrast of power and elegance and daresay, Burgundian character. There is an earthy, savoury element to go with the dried herb and fruits flavours. A special wine of delicate power.

"Light, even, garnet-ruby red colour, paler edged. The nose is full, deep and broad with plenty of presence and concentrated aromas of savoury red berry fruits melded with savoury whole bunch stalk, dried herbs, earth and mushroomy aromas. Some aromatic lift is present and the nose intensifies in density and detail. Medium-bodied, the palate is soft and deeply packed with brooding flavours of savoury red berry fruits melded with earth, game and undergrowth, complexed by subtle waves of whole bunch stalk elements. The flavours form a rounded and concentrated core that is harmoniously integrated. The fruit is supported by supple tannin structure and grip and underlying acidity that seamlessly carries the complex flavours to a sweet, long, lingering finish of red fruits, dried herbs and mushrooms. This is a full, rounded and concentrated, brooding Pinot Noir with complex red fruited flavours and a supple, seamless palate. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked game meat over the next 6+ years. MS Pinot Noir, ungrafted, from vines planted 1986, hand-picked and indigenous yeast fermented with 100% whole clusters to 12.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in seasoned French oak casks. 289 dozen made."

"From the first hill-grown vineyard in North Canterbury, the 2014 vintage is from ungrafted, unirrigated vines, planted in 1986. Hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for a year in seasoned oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it has lightish, youthful colour. Medium-bodied, it is a subtle, almost fragile red, with gentle cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, showing very good complexity."
