Black Estate winemaker Nicholas Brown has been awarded 2022 NZ Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine
Black Estate have certainly established themselves as one of the stars of Waipara in recent years. Their wines are outstanding across the board and their winery restaurant is so busy it can be a challenge to get into on the weekend! This is fantastic Pinot and equally as nice at home as it is at Black Estate.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Deep ruby hue. Smells like dark plum, violets, black olive, woody herbs, cinnamon, and earth. The palate is dense, typical of Pinot Noirs from the Home vineyard clays, with emerging silky fruit flavours and a persistent mineral finish. Unfiltered wine with small amounts of sediment. Decanting will allow maximum expression of aroma and purity of fruit. Drink now to 2030."

Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"A beguiling complexity with a core of ripe, highly scented dark berries and red flowers, dried herb and core of minerality. Aromas of sweet gentle baking spices of French barrel and a leesy smoky complexity. Tense, ripe, fruity, youthful, varietal and pure fruited on the palate. Textures form polished tannins and medium+ acidity, then flavours of dark cherry and plum, raspberry and chalk. A lengthy finish with tension and poise. A lovely wine that deserves some cellar time with best drinking from late 2022 through 2028+."
Nick Stock, JamesSuckling.com (2019 Vintage)
"The nose here is packed with tightly wrapped red cherries, plums, boysenberries, blueberries, herbs, bracken and subtle spice. The palate is very fresh, fine and intense and has a well structured feel, with well-proportioned and sturdy tannins, held bright with fine, fresh acidity. Pure cherry flavors abound."
94/100 Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast (2018 Vintage)
"Nicholas Brown and Penelope Naish are part of the new wave of talent in North Canterbury, making organically farmed wines with minimal intervention. There’s a lovely vibrancy of color to this vintage of Pinot, and a raw energy. Oodles of crunchy fresh strawberry notes are backed by cinnamon, clove, flower stalks and stone. The sappy tannins have a surprising bite but an easy, natural presence rather than being oak-driven. There’s beautiful fruit purity and an overall cool climate, unadulterated vibe."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2018 Vintage)
"Certified organic, the 2018 vintage is ruby-hued, with a highly fragrant, savoury bouquet. Medium-bodied, it has strong, vibrant, plummy, spicy, nutty flavours, fresh acidity, and excellent complexity. Best drinking 2022+."
