Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"The 2017 Black Estate Home Cabernet Franc was grown on at Home Vineyard located 6 kilometres north east of the Waipara Junction, in the Omihi sub-district of Waipara Valley, North Canterbury. This is a north facing sedimentary clay fan on a gentle hill side slope. The soils are mainly Awapuni clay with calcium carbonate deposits. The Cabernet Franc vineyard that sits in the belly of the slope above the original vineyard is 0.3 hectares. Cabernet Franc clones 214, 327, and 678 grow on root stock and were planted at 6133 vines per hectare in 2011 by the Naish Family.

100% destemmed. 80% whole berry. Fermented in an open top fermenter for 28 days using Home vineyard derived yeast. Hand plunged once per day during the peak of ferment. Pressed using a basket press and aged in neutral barrique (45%) and puncheon (55%) for 7 months. No SO2 added. Un-fined and unfiltered."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"The ageworthy 2017 vintage was estate-grown, hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Full-coloured, it is a graceful, medium-bodied red, with very youthful berryish, plummy, slightly spicy flavours, cool-climate freshness and vibrancy, savoury notes adding complexity, gentle tannins, and excellent vigour and harmony. Best drinking 2019+."

4 Stars & 17.5/20 Raymond Chan, May 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is firmly packed and well-concentrated with a rounded core of black berried fruit entwined with cool-spectrum blackcurrant, dark herb, a little stalkiness and hints of black minerals. This has very good depth and intensity with fruit clarity. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and tightly concentrated with a core of cooler spectrum blackcurrants, blackberries, and dark herbs. The mouthfeel is fresh and vibrant with crisp, lacy acidity enhancing the fruit clarity, and lending a zestiness and raciness to the palate. The fruit flows along a finely extracted tannin line which underlines the fruit with linearity. The wine carries to a long, fine-textured finish. This is a taut and concentrated Cabernet Franc with fruit clarity, showing currant, herbs and minerals on a brisk, textured palate. Match with herb-marinated red meat dishes over the next 4 years. Fruit from vines planted in 2011, clones 214, 327 and 678, hand-picked, fully destemmed, and indigenous yeast fermented with 80% whole berries to 12.0% alc., the wine aged in 45% barriques and 55% puncheons, all seasoned oak for 7 months with no SO2 added. Certified BioGro organic. 103 cases made."
