The Damsteep vineyard is aptly named. Located about 10kms north of the Home Block on the eastern side of the main highway. Formerly known as the Spye vineyard, Black Estate purchased this in 2012 and have converted it to organics. The steep clay slopes are planted in several blocks. The Riesling is on the lower slopes. The fruit was hand harvested over a 3 week period – from green tinged fruits, to golden, to shrivelled then gently slow pressed with a portion fermented in older oak. All naturally fermented with very low Sulphur addition. This is a dry, mealy, nutty, savoury style.

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Fruit for this Riesling is sourced from our Damsteep Vineyard which is located in the north east of Waipara Valley at the foot of the Omihi saddle. This hillside vineyard was planted in 1999 on clay and limestone rich soils. The soils in the Riesling vineyard are very dense brown to orange in colour and inter bedded with sandstones and subordinate limestone horizons. This 2.2 hectare hillside vineyard has a vine density of more than 5000 vine per hectare."

4 1/2 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, September 2017 (2016 Vintage)
"This is a really unusual, spicy, punchy riesling from their clay and limestone-laden Damsteep vineyard located at the foot of the Omihi Saddle. Grown biodynamically and 2 years into their organic certification, these 17 year-old vines are really hitting their straps. Matured in 3-10yr old barrels, followed by malolactic fermentation gives gorgeous, creamy complexity to the upfront mandarin, lime and Red Delicious apple elements. I had a second glass a day after opening the bottle and it was even better, so if you have any semblance of self-discipline, I suggest you do the same."
