Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"The 2019 Bilancia Syrah was sourced from a single vineyard on Roy’s Hill, Hawke’s Bay. 2019 was a great vintage for Hawke’s Bay and the wines from this harvest reflect this.
Perfect Syrah fruit was destemmed and crushed to open top vessels for fermentation. The wine was pressed at dryness and run to mainly older French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in these barrels for 10 months.
In Hawke’s Bay no variety more so than Syrah says “I’m from here”; this is true for the 2019 Bilancia Syrah. Fresh and juicy with the requisite berry and dark fruit characters coupled with Hawke’s Bay spice and hints of earthiness. Gentle tannins round out the palate.
A great wine for opening on release, the 2019 Syrah is a vibrant, youthful wine and can be enjoyed immediately but it will also continue to develop over the next four to six years."
Metro Magazine Top 10 Wines for 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Bilancia is the project of the hugely respected husband-and-wife winemaking team of Lorraine Leheny and Warren Gibson (who lends his name to two wines in the Top 10). The fruit from this wine comes from their phenomenal hillside vineyard, overlooking the Gimblett Gravels. This is quite the syrah. “Juicy, ripe blackberries and black pepper,” said Martinisi, and there really isa dense, brooding nose to this wine. It also has areal velvet, supple, generous palate. Really good stuff."
