A superb deal on a superb Pinot from one of the Martinborough's best kept secrets. Big Sky Wines is one of a number of top wine producers situated along Te Muna Road in Martinborough – think Escarpment, Craggy Range, Julicher etc. In 2005 Katherine Jacobs and Jeremy Corban (yes, one of those Corbans) took over an established site planted in 1989 and 1999 and initially supplied contract fruit to other labels. Now they make their own impressive wines from that top quality fruit under the Big Sky label.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"This is our flagship wine, from our low vigour, low cropping vineyard. Hand picked, crushed into 2 tonne open fermenters, hand plunged, and judicious use of new oak in ageing. We make it to show off the delicious Te Muna fruit characters – ripe berryfruit, dark cherries and plums – set against mouthfilling savoriness, warm spice, and silky tannins. Lithe and elegant."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"The wine offers gorgeous fruit intensity with seductive savoury nuances, showing spiced cherry, ripe strawberry, olive, game and toasted almond characters on the nose. It is beautifully weighted and rounded on the palate, displaying silky texture backed by fine, grainy tannins, leading to a persistent, delicately dry finish. At its best: now to 2022."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2017 Vintage)
"Offering very good value, the 2017 vintage is ruby-hued, with strong, berryish, spicy, nutty flavours, savoury notes adding complexity, and a firm finish. It shows a slight lack of fruit sweetness, compared to the 2018, but needs time; open 2021+."
