Syrah has long been grown in Sicily but historically it has been blended with the local variety Nero d'Avola. The volcanic and chalky soils of Sicily are now recognised as great terroir for Syrah and we are starting to see a lot more single varietal releases like this. Barone Montalto Syrah 2019 is a full-bodied, deeply flavoured red with great tannins and a toasty, spicy finish.
The Syrah vines grow in Barone Montalto‘s vineyards outside Marsala in western Sicily at an altitude of 350 m. The grapes were harvested by hand, sorted and destemmed followed by fermentation on the skins in stainless steel tanks for 12-15 days. The wine was matured for about 8 months in French oak barriques.
91/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 Vintage)
“Deeply-tinted syrah with intense blackcurrant, cassis, black pepper, violet and liquorice flavours. Perhaps a little jammy but at an acceptable level give the warm growing conditions. It certainly packs quite a punch for a wine at this price point.”
