Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Grown on the clay loams of upper Waipara Valley floor, this Sauvignon Blanc was machine harvested with modern, gentle technology.  The long autumn of warm days ,and cool nights allowed for the development of ripe flavours, while retaining a mouth-watering freshness. After the grapes were harvested, de-stemming followed, then a long, slow press. The juice was settled, racked and a cool fermentation in stainless steel followed. This has allowed the wine to retain the fresh typical varietal aromas of ripe gooseberry, with hints of lemon zest and a fresh lift. These flavours continue into the palate, forming a delicious wine with a pleasingly dry finish, and a perfect balance of ripe fruit and tangy acidity.

This Sauvignon will develop in the bottle for several years, but is perfect now with a wide range of foods – think freshly cooked seafood, asparagus and many vegetarian dishes.  As with all our white wines, serve this wine lightly chilled."

"It's immediately appealing on the nose with feijoa, kiwifruit, green rockmelon and lemon zest aromas, leading to a succulent palate offering excellent fruit purity and intensity. Upfront and delectably expressed. At its best: now to 2024."

  • In te reo, Ataahua means 'a place of beauty'.

  • Ataahua's vineyard covers 8.24 hectares in Waipara Valley, North Canterbury wine country. It is planted on central Waipara's Glasnevin soils, situated on the Weka River terraces (taking advantage of a micro-climate unique in New Zealand).

  • Syrah and Pinot Noir grapes grow on the lower terrace, an area fed with mulch to build up the soil structure.

  • Pinot Noir grows on the middle and top terraces, while Riesling and Chardonnay plantings also grow on the clay loam soil of the top terrace.

  • Ataahua is a family-run vineyard, worked by multiple generations of the Henderson-Grants whānau and their team.

  • Ataahua are committed to sustainability and, as such, are certified sustainable. This entails looking after the land with future generations in mind, and for Ataahua this means strategically planting natives to aim for carbon neutrality and undertaking other practical endeavours such as rain water collection for irrigation.
