Everybody knows Astrolabe for their revered Sauvignon Blanc but their Chardonnay is yet more proof they do great things across the board. This 2019 vintage is something quite special and for Simon Waghorn whose early career started with making some of those famed Chardonnays for Corbans and Cooks back in the 80's this is a pinnacle. Astrolabe don't enter wine shows – Word of mouth does the advertising and trust us, this is very, very good.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"Aromas of some ripe melon and dried stone fruits with vanilla and butter notes and a subtle mealiness. A wine of very elegant texture with stone fruit, vanilla creaminess, toasty oak, pleasing weight and a long, dry and mineral finish.
The fruit was hand-picked and wholebunch pressed. Only the free-run juice was used, and this was fermented in French oak puncheons and barriques, using both select and wild yeast. Frequent bâtonnage, full malolactic fermentation and ten months’ barrel maturation have added to the texture and complexity. This wine is unfined. Bottled 12th February, 2020."
5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, January 2022 (2019 Vintage)
"It’s rolling in soft ripe peachy plushness, elegant, creamy textures, and a stylish, nutty finish – so basically it’s perfect. I love the vanilla and cashew character, its underlying stylishness and sophistication, its beautiful balance and poise. It’s an absolute classic."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2019 Vintage)
"The 2019 vintage was hand-harvested at three sites in the Awatere Valley, lower Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys, and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques and puncheons. Bright, light lemon/green, it is subtle, mouthfilling wine, with ripe stone-fruit flavours, slightly biscuity and creamy notes adding complexity, and a finely textured, smooth, very harmonius finish. Drink now or cellar."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Aromas of sweet vanilla oak and fresh yellow stone fruits, red apple and crushed stone earthy qualities. Weighty, creamy textures and toasty oak are contrasted by a core of fruit and complexity. Flavours mirror the nose while the oak offer finely textured tannins with medium+ acidity for contrast. Balanced and well made with a lengthy and persistently flavoured finish. Drink now and through 2024+."
92/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2019 Vintage)
"A blend of grapes from several vineyards produces a distinctly Marlborough style chardonnay with bright, grapefruit, toasted nut, tree fruit and nectarine flavours. Light and fresh with a silken texture."
