Everybody knows Astrolabe for their revered Sauvignon Blanc but this wine is yet more proof they do great things across the board.
Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"The Astrolabe Province Marlborough Chardonnay is made from grapes grown at Astrolabe Farm Vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley and Wrekin Vineyard in the Southern Valleys. We hand-pick the grapes and whole-cluster press to reduce phenolic structure and allow attractive grape solids fermentation characters to come through. The wine is then aged in French-oak barrels, lees-stirred and allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation to give structure, body and complexity. I enjoy complementing the natural stonefruit and citrus flavours of our Chardonnay grapes by building aromatic complexity and texture during winemaking to craft an elegant, dry and mouthfilling wine.
Full ripe melon and dried stone fruits and fig, light nut meal and brûlée notes, with some light leesiness. A wine of gentle creaminess and elegant texture, with tropical and stonefruit flavours, pleasing weight and long, dry finish."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"Really lovely bouquet of Chardonnay – calm, even, sophisticated and lively with aromas of grapefruit, lemon and apple, some flower suggestions of white blossom, light white baking spices and new wood (spice). Dry with a nutty creamy texture, packed with flavours that reflect the bouquet, medium+ acidity and weight, warm and generous, lengthy balanced finish. A very nice example with immediate enjoyability and through 2024."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"The 2016 vintage was hand-picked at two sites, in the lower Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys, and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques and puncheons. Drinking well now, it is a bright, light lemon/green, mouthfilling, sweet-fruited wine, with generous, vibrant grapefruit and peach flavours, biscuity notes adding complexity, balanced acidity and a slightly creamy texture. Drink now to 2020."
