Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"This Chardonnay is a tribute to our founder, celebrating his unwavering belief in Hawkes Bay as a truly great winegrowing region. Only crafted in the most exceptional years in limited quantities, these wines are the absolute pinnacle of Vidal Estate."
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"'The absolute pinnacle of Vidal Estate', the 2016 vintage is an extremely rare wine. Hand-picked in the Kokako Vineyard, in the Ohiti Valley, the 2016 vintage was fermented and lees-aged for a year in French oak casks (33 per cent new). From a warm growing season, it has a highly fragrant, complex bouquet, with a hint of gunflint. Bright, light yellow/green, it is very intense and vibrant, with deep, youthful, grapefruit-like flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak, appetising acidity and a lasting finish. Likely to be a 10-year wine, it's well worth cellaring to 2022+."
5 Stars & 96/100, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, August 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Flagship chardonnay from a top producer. 1,600 bottles made. Intense and quite complex chardonnay with grapefruit, citrus, white peach, struck flint, mineral, hazelnut, brioche and bran biscuit flavours. A powerful wine that can be appreciated now but will continue to develop with bottle age. "
5 Stars & 97/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Exhibiting precision and poise as well as richness and complexity, this magnificent rendition shows nectarine, grapefruit, toasted almond and oatmeal characters on the nose with a seductive whiff of gun smoke. The palate is impressively concentrated, offering outstanding depth and breath, wonderfully enhanced by refined mouthfeel and flowing texture. It is classically structured by brilliantly pitched acidity, finishing persistent, engaging and gratifying. At its best: 2020 to 2028."
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2019 (2016 Vintage)
"Tasted over two days the bouquet and palate of this wine develop into a fine example of Chardonnay, Hawkes Bay and fine wine making. Aromas of a gun flint and grapefruit peel, apple and lemon, white peach and oak wood. Dry, youthful and expressive with tart citrus and white fleshed stone fruit flavours then ripe red apple and sweet vanilla oak. Great texture and length, balanced and well made. A Premier Cru Chablis style. Drink now and through 2026."
94/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2016 Vintage)
"There are approximately 120 cases of the stunning 2016 Anthony Joseph Vidal 1888 Chardonnay, sourced from the Kokaka Vineyard. Subtle, elegant notes of pencil shavings frame the citrus and peach notes on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is electric, zippy and fresh without being tight or unapproachable. Long, dry and mouthwatering on the finish, this is a terrific example of Hawkes Bay Chardonnay."
