Winery notes (2014 Vintage)
"This Chardonnay is a tribute to our founder, celebrating his unwavering belief in Hawkes Bay as a truly great winegrowing region. Only crafted in the most exceptional years in limited quantities, these wines are the absolute pinnacle of Vidal Estate."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 Vintage)
"The absolute pinnacle of Vidal Estate', the 2014 vintage is an extremely rare wine – only 61 cases were made, released in mid-late 2017. Hand-picked from vines then 18 years old, in the Lyons Vineyard, in the Gimblett Gravels, it was fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques (50 per cent new), and matured on its yeast lees in oak for 11 months. Bright, light lemon/green, it has a rich, smoky, complex bouquet. Still developing, it is weighty, fleshy and multi-layered, with concentrated, vibrant, peachy, mealy, biscuity flavours, showing notable power and complexity, and a tightly structured, dry, very persistent finish. Best drinking 2019+."

5 Stars & 98/100, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2014 Vintage)
"A new flagship chardonnay for Vidal with intense citrus, mineral, struck flint, nectarine and spicy oak flavours. This wine makes a strong statement. Youthful, powerful, elegant and potentially very complex wine. A very impressive chardonnay."

5 Stars & 20.0/20 Raymond Chan, September 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with green hues, lighter on the edge. The nose is very tightly bound and taut with intense and remarkably penetrating aromas of piquant white stonefruits harmoniously layered with complexing flint and mineral notes, along with creamy and nutty oak, with smoke and toast. The nose has great depth and unfolds in volume with aeration, the fruit blossoming. Medium-full bodied, the palate has immense depth and intensity, but with a finely concentrated heart and elegance and finesse as a feature. The flavours are a complex amalgam of white stonefruits, white florals, flint and minerals, creamy and nutty barrel-ferment notes, and smoky, toasty oak. The mouthfeel is lively with lacy acidity, and is underlined by fruit-driven power providing considerable linearity. The wine carries with excellent energy to a very long, sustained finish of stonefruits, nuts and smoke that lingers forever. This is a superbly concentrated, intense Chardonnay with a complex amalgam of stonefruits, nuts, smoke, flint and minerals on a vibrant, refined and powerful palate and a never-ending finish. Serve with grilled and roasted poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5-6+ years. Hand-picked clone 15 fruit from the ‘Lyons’ vineyard ‘Love Block’, vines planted in 1996, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months on lees in 50% new French oak barriques, undergoing batonnage and MLF, followed by one month in tank. 736 bottles made."

5 Stars & 98/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, September 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"A spectacular chardonnay. The gloriously expressed bouquet shows grapefruit, rockmelon, gun smoke, toasted almond and vanilla aromas with subtle savoury nuances. The palate is superbly concentrated and powerful, while remaining vibrant and elegant, delivering layers of fine texture backed by bright acidity. It is symphonic, perfectly proportioned and immensely seductive with its pristine fruit flavours and engaging savoury notes. A dramatic and profound chardonnay for serious wine enthusiasts. At its best: 2018 to 2026."

97/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"Complex and focused bouquet with aromas of citrus zest, white fleshed stone fruit, flowers, mineral, apple and a youthful cashew nut oak core; a sulphide note adds additional complexity. On the palate – packed with texture, acidity, fruit core and focus. The cashew, wood spice and vanilla oak layers frame the palate carrying the weight of the fruit and flavour well; very lengthy finish, fabulous balance and charm. Drink now and through 2030."

5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, November 2017 (2014 Vintage)
"The rumours were out that winemaker Hugh Crichton was planning to release something epic in the Vidal chardonnay stakes, and lordy, they were right. From the most glorious chardonnay vintage Hawke’s Bay has seen in a stretch, comes a formidably gorgeous wine scented with popcorn, gunflint and grilled grapefruit and offering gracefully ripe, roasted stonefruit, soft, caramelized oak characters and a veil of creamy, nutty, spice-edged notes. Beautifully built, beautifully balanced and would look beautiful in your cellar."
