Anciano 35 Year Old Vines Garnacha is a wine we featured a year or so back (at a much higher price). A call from importer Steve Bennett saying he'd been offered some on a 'deal' from the winery in Spain due to a cancelled American order – "would we like some"? A no-brainer really. This is such a good wine and still has plenty of life – a bottle we had open got better and better over 3 days. Dark in the glass, it also tastes of dark and warmth. Smooth, almost liqueur-like, with a good savoury grittiness on the back; a comforting style that seems to disappear from the glass so easily. Not familiar with Grenache? If you like dark, richer styled Pinot Noirs, this is a perfect alternative at a fraction of the price.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"Vines with an average age of over 35 years are grown on chalk and clay soils at an altitude of 600-900m. The combination of free draining soils, minimal rainfall and unique microclimate all add to the excellent colour and distinctive varietal aromas. The grapes are hand harvested, crushed and destemmed. Temperature controlled fermentation takes place at 28°C for 7 days followed by a short maceration. 15% of the wine is matured in American and French oak for 4 months before bottling.
Mid to deep purple in colour. Pronounced intense aromas of fresh raspberry and cherry, combine with more complex aromas of prune, earthy notes, and sweet spice. Full bodied on the palate with flavours of soft raspberry and wild berries that lead to a long spicy finish."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"A splendid attack of dark fruits on the nose together with seductive aromas of game, roasted beet, cedar and truffle. The palate is concentrated and expansive, exhibiting sweet berry flavours as well as rich savoury undertones, wonderfully complemented by fine texture and chalky tannins, finishing impressively long and classically firm. This is seamless and delicious with awesome complexity. At its best: now to 2021."

92/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, October 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Made by Norrel Robertson MW. Soft, silken-textured Rioja that is very approachable now with appealing plum, coffee, vanilla and chocolate/mocha characters. High alcohol (15%) adds a little warmth but it does contribute to the wine’s slipperiness. Good value red with character."
Yvonne Lorkin, August 2018 (2015 Vintage)
"Here’s a comfortingly rich, round and rumpty Spanish Garnacha made from 35 y.o. vines from Calatayud. Made by Norrel Robertson MW, it’s scented with cough drop characters, Irish Moss, anise, dutch cocoa and hints of saddle leather – all of which saturate onto the palate. The acidity is fresh, finely tuned and the tannins are powdery and prickle the inside of one’s top lip when you sip. Hearty yet elegantly structured and definitely calls out for a large slab of protein. Delicious."
93/100 International Wine Challenge (2015 Vintage)
"If you like your wines big, bold and full of flavour then look no further! Opulent, perfumed nose with nuances of violets. Ripe, juicy palate complemented by silky tannins. This wine comes from the collaboration of World class winemakers and local knowledge to produce a fruit driven wine typical of the Calatayud area, which encapsulates all the ruggedness concentration and character of the old vine fruit."
