2 Heads Shiraz is a collaboration between McLaren Vale grape grower / winemaker Matt Broomhead (Three Dark Horses wines) & kiwi importer / distributor David Healy. Previous 'collaborations' have been outstanding – The Bandy Cabernet, Batch 1, 2 3 Shiraz. This is the first with a label that recognises the full collaborative effort.
The simple goal was to craft a wine that would deliver both great drinking and great value, suited to the NZ palate. We have to say they got this nailed. From the inky purple colour through to the delicious rich plummy Shiraz fruit and beautifully judged graphitey tannins. A bottle we had open just got better and better over the 3 days. We are seriously impressed by the value this Shiraz offers.
The 2019 edition Halliday Wine Companion saw Matt Broomhead and Three Dark Horses become a 5 star rated winery for the first time as well as a ‘Dark Horse’ winery. Halliday commenting "Moreover, I’m very confident that Matt Broomhead’s venture is destined for greater things in the coming years, as its newly acquired vineyard and onsite winery (in time for the 2019 vintage) come on-stream".
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"20 year old vines. 100% basket pressed, whole berry ferment for 7 days with regular pump overs. 15 months in a selection of both French and American oak, 25% new. Just 10 barrels making the final selection
Dense and expressive. Aromas of blackberries, chocolate and woody spice. The palate has flavours of plum and chocolate. Some anise with a touch of earth. Soft and rich with a plush mid-palate. Firm but ripe tannin giving it flow and a long, even finish."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, November 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Deep, dark and brooding, this gorgeous shiraz shows black/blueberry, Black Doris plum, cocoa and cedar characters on the nose with a delightful touch of pepper spice. It’s concentrated and wonderfully weighted on the palate with excellent fruit intensity backed by supple mouthfeel and polished tannins, finishing long and delectable. At its best: now to 2028."
